I never think about switching to Windows. I installed my first Linux distro in February/March this year and I have never had the slightest desire to turn back to Windows.

Huh, Yea Linux can never compete with windows because spyware is non-existent in Linux, Viruses are rare, Linux never Locks up, and Linux does what you want it to. When windows loses those cool features maybe then there could be competition, oh yea and Linux has already overthrown windows in the realm of an actual working operating system. When I work on the dam XP system at work it pisses me off so bad I want to smash the dam monitor.

Try firing it up from the command line with the -v switch (if it has one) and see what output there is when it crashes. Perhaps that'll help you figure it out faster. I hope you get it to work. I now trust it more than any windows burning app I've used. The only stumper was writing vcd's and that was solved by checking the box in the preferences to have a choice between writing apps (cdrecord and cdrdao). Kewl after that. Probably burned 60 cds since I started using it.

Personally I feel that many experienced users don't see the big picture. Since computers became easy to use by the general public the world was propelled in technology. Businesses became more efficient, research into every field really took off, in general great things became possible without the need to pay a university or private company to compute data for you.

The only reason this became possible is price and ease of use.

What is the point of a computer if it doesn't make your life easier? Why should a researcher put his/her work on hold just to take a few years to learn a computer system.

Why is it that ease of use is so frowned upon in the linux community? This should be the goal!

Great so you know a great deal about linux and use it over windows. What good does that do for the future of computer technology? I would have to wonder if this is the root of many newbies complaints. When they go to complain about it all they get is a beating for their opinion and I'd wager that many people involved in linux development react just as many linux comfortable people here do.
One word to sum up your entire dispute with Linux:
Code:
MACINTOSH

Tell me how Windows is easier then Macintosh!?

You know those graphical movies you watch? You know those non-cell animation you see in games, such as Warcraft III? Windows is too puny to make them. They are made with MACINTOSHS! And guess what kernel powers a Macintosh?! UNIX! (A Kernel very similiar to Linux) Hope that helps.

The only thing that spawns computer technology is indight. For every Windows troll and Linux troll, there are thousands of developers who want an equal balance between Linux and Windows, to make sure they get rich.
Windows is the best choice for the intelligent person, and Linux is the best choice for the genious.

i dont have time to read the whole thread just wanted to make these comments

first linux doesnt not want to "overthrow" windows .. just to provide an alternative.

2ndly linux can never compete with the UFness of windows since windows tries to be (stupid user) user friendly at the cost of everything else e.g. developer-friendly and stability.

3rdly linux will not become popular with the "not even remotely g33kish" ppl . however as the computer users as a whole become more and more "g33kish" then linux users will go up.

why i use linux :
because the is no (insert bad word here) regedit
i know what the computer is doing
the console is very powerful but not at the cost of the GUI.
it allows me to let out my inner (but is getting more outer all the time) g33k.
not to mention it is not only free but also Free[dom].

also from reading the first article i think what the writer was really upset with was not linux but WINE ....... (and properly mandrake linux [or whatever slow bloated n00b distro s/he is using] at that)

just my .

BTW looked at a graph a few days ago of browser OSes ... XP is still going up ... but all over windows versions were going down more that XP was going up.... so in total windows is getting let popular

Couldn't have said it better myself. No one will be able to overthrow Winblows, just be alternatives. Going head to head with Winblows and Micromoth would be pointless.

I like watching these flamey threads, as I like to roast weinies and marshmallows.

As I said before, who's competing? The only competition on my machine is for the MBR (win loses)

If Linux Distro developers sponsored and paid a Glamour Model to pose semi naked at every city centre in the world brandishing a copy of Mandrake or Red Hat and the promise of a date. Linux sales would go well over Windows in a day.
Consumers dont understand reliability or stability, they understand actors in suits looking clever on the TV as Sys Admins, hence they go out and but windows not even realising their is an reliable alternative.

Maybe I am dumb but, I really can't tell from this threat, from who is supporting windows and Linux in this thread. I guess I never did have a sense of humour.

Thats the fun of the thread, everyone has something to say and something to disagree or agree with. Having read all the threads i think the consensus is the linux will not overthrow windows, despite its brilliance. It will merely provide an alternative that should grow more popular as people in general become more knowledgeable about computers.
