View Poll Results: I am French and For / Against Nuclear Energy?
If you consider the accidents in detail, they were in early reactors (Windscale) or those with incompetent management (Chernobyl, Three Mile Island). A check at Wikipedia suggests that most of major problems have been in the USA (poorly regulated private enterprise) and the old Soviet block (even worse state enterprise).
The consequences have generally been minor: of the clean-up crew at Windscale, none experienced any related health problems during the next 50 years.
Well, it has been reported numerous cancers for populations living close to nuclear plants, especially old ones. More than other regions, take old nuclear plants in France for instance, where cancer rates are higher (source: French newspaper studies). There were many reportages but the authorities still see no danger about it.
It is politics. As long as it brings money...
I think it is bad because they see dying their relatives, close.
Fukushima (and Three Mile Island) are actually strong arguments in favor of nuclear. After all the hype, these accidents really weren't that bad and each would have been easy to avoid with competent engineering. In proportion to accidents vs. power generated for wind and other forms, nuclear (except for Chernobyl) looks very good.
(New) nuclear is completely stupid in the U.S. for the near to medium term because of natural gas being cheap. Heck, even coal is starting to shrink for partly the same reason (and partly it finally being made more difficult with regulations -- bye bye Brayton Point), never mind starting a huge expensive project with long term risk (economic and otherwise) like starting a fission reactor.
I know (some) gas burns cleaner like hydrogen that can be produced by a solar process (less to none radiation bounced back than traditional panels or black top.) I believe in a social energy grid but in my densely populated neck of the woods we are not aloud to have solar and wind in our yard$ (just look at the way heath care is going!) A TV show World's Greenest Homes (don't remember what earlier episode) a San Francisco home was the first to allow wind and hopefully will or is paving the way...

Just heard on the radio (MPR) that the power companies want to charge people who can feed the grid with their own power, because they then don't help pay for the grids billions in up keep (supposedly\ignorantly); as the whip cracks over the sheeple$ heads...

I've read that in Spain people who use solar panels to generate power for their own houses will be charged a tax. That's the logic of the current world economic system, which favours economic profit (for a few) above anything else. The governments should promote the use of clean energies instead of making people run away from them. Besides, this raises the question: how are they going to charge for the energy of the sun, that they have not produced and that costs them nothing?
True. Part of what was said on that radio segment was about wondering what went on in meetings and power-points between complains and "government," perhaps they try to shape a better future but we'll never know so probably not?!

Have you ever seen a government does the interest of the "normal" people?
Yes there are some examples, but I should be a bank or an oil company to be sure to say "Hey fantastic, this government is doing something for me".
It's a little frustrating having the suspect that rich are becoming richer and poor poorer

Furthermore it is especially bad below 50-100 km around a nuclear plant. Since they are a lot in France, imagine the stress on the population. Lot died and regret where they live. I wouldn't import milk products from France.
