An OS is an OS....it just depends on what you prefer.
Unstable but userfriendly (Windows) or stable and not as user friendly (Linux)
My SuSe installations are very user friendly. Even my almost computer illiterate wife can use it just fine. Plus she can't screw up my user settings in Linux as she has her own account.

only if you expect it to act like windows.
in that case, you're not computer friendly.
Right on! Much of the time, when people say "it's not user-friendly," they mean: it doesn't work the way Windows does. Well, how user-friendly is Windows? The answer is: if you've never used any computer before, pretty much just as unfriendly as Linux is. I wouldn't fancy my chances of teaching my gran to use Windows any more than I would teaching her to use Linux.
Windows being user-friendly depends entirely on how you define the word 'Friendly'.
I would not consider the ability for software to install itself to Internet Exploiters Trusted Zone without asking, to be 'Friendly'.
Nor would I consider the running of services by default to be 'Friendly', requiring time to figure which services can be safely disabled and then disabling them.
As far as I'm concerned Linux is much more user-friendly, regardless of whether other people consider it more diffficult to use.
Being easy to use has never equalled being friendly in my book. (And its a big book )
I dislike people who expect computers to work every-time, and dont bother to learn anything about them, almost as much as I would dislike someone who didnt know how to drive and jumped behind the wheel to head off down a busy highway. Both kinds of people can cause ridiculous amounts of frustration, (though of course only one of them can cause physical harm).
Is 15-20 minutes every couple of days really so hard to spare to spend time reading docs or just experimenting?
i agree. some of us like to be challenged for the sake of the challenge. it feels damn good when you finally overcome the obstacle- whether it be a new piece of hardware, tweaking a video card, etc. as a member of a growing community, you'll find 50 people searching for the same answers and you can help them! i mean, i didn't HAVE to rebuild my car from ground up, either. but it feels better rolling with something YOU created.
i think linux is, and quite quickly, becoming more than windows in one big way. we are a vast group of users from anywhere with an internet connection. when a new program is born there will be many more people than M$ can pay working on it and SHARING (god they must hate that!) our knowledge with everyone else. this is how things get better, faster, and easier. not by worrying over liscencing and stupid Digital Rights Management. soon, we will have all the games and programs that are windows-only at this point... if not better ones. and by just typing instead of double-clicking, you are helping it succeed as a desktop after KONQUERORING the server world!

Not just over the internet, but on Amateur Radio.. In fact just here where I live there are 5 of use ham operators that are also linux users, and as we sit on here having our mini-roundtable nets talking about linux we are gaining more interest with others...
I have been using mandrake 10, and apart from a few little hardware issues (radeon cards) I seriously think it is ready to replace windows XP as an alternative OS for your average computer home/office user. Well done Mandrake can't wait for the final release.
