Ok then, there are about 50 million programs out there that will completly remove it from your system. If you are too stupid to look, then it is your fault.

And besides the fact, the only way you could access the things you get rid of is by going into windows folder and rummaging about until you find the exe. Do you really need the whole 1 meg it takes up? Are you on a 1 gig system?

EDIT: then how come I go to the 'run' in windows start menu, type in msconfig, and it gives me ms config?

Sorry about the edit, I was posting as you did.

Pauli: Well there's always a way. When you get a chance I think that last one will work, cd to the CD drive and look for executables, like install But it's possible you need to re write the MBR, but I think windows will happily do that. :p

Pauli 03-08-2004 06:42 PM

ok good. Ill try, thankies.

*huggles*

ill report back if I don't get it :)

Don't want ya ta be killed over a mess up with Partition Magic. Borrow a friends windows 98 startup disk (yeah, the floppy) and put it in yer machine. Fire it up (be sure the BIOS is configured to boot from floppy). Type fdisk /mbr

That'll "restore" a Windows 98 MBR to your drive. Now, fire in your XP cd and boot tothe recovery console and type fixmbr.

You should be booting to Windows XP after that, unless you really hosed things with Partition Magic.

As far as swearing off Linux, we'll miss you as another community member, but the choice is yours. I'd suggest you give your free thought another chance and install a distro with its manual (as in get a boxed set). You'll be glad you did.

Yes, that method will work. I had to do it to get my XP cd to boot to the recovery console after a FreeBSD experiment (and my 1/2 hour with LindowsOS). Seems that XP (and 2000) get picky about what OS has been touching its precious MBR. History teachers are around because its important. Seems that history's important here too.

Just give the boxed set of Slackware a try. It is by far the best install of Linux I have ever had, and would not dissapoint.......

Pauli: This may help: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/fhas...stall_grub.html
In Windows XP, you can uninstall GRUB as follows:

Boot from the Windows XP CD and press the "R" key during the setup in order to start the Recovery Console. Select your Windows XP installation from the list and enter the administrator password. At the input prompt, enter the command "FIXMBR" and confirm the query with "y". The MBR will be rewritten and GRUB will be uninstalled. Press "exit" to reboot the computer.

Ok Im back. I f***ked around with partition magic and windows xp pro sp1 boot disks and managed to get it to boot into win xp! w00t!

I did fixmbr and I ended up writing a new boot sector, but now my music HD, THE ONE I WANTED TO SAVE, is considered to be 'Bad' in Parition magic and now I cant get my music.

It says the FixMBR thing is messed up, what can I do to fix this?

EDIT: and I told you, I can't boot from cd. It turns out I burned my XP pro disc wrong, and now I have to get the original from my father :( Curses. But still, it wont even check for the disc.

witeshark 03-09-2004 05:54 PM

Hmm at this point you may have to wait to get an original Xp disk i guess...

Pauli 03-09-2004 06:05 PM

yeah, but then I still cant boot from cd.

And Im past that cd, I need to somehow edit my mbr for my slave drive. :(

sirpelidor 03-09-2004 06:13 PM

sorry if i am missing something here, may I ask why u can't boost anything from CD, if you go to your BIOS, are you able to choose to have a system boot from cd rom?

witeshark 03-09-2004 06:22 PM

Leave it to M$ have this happen! :p

Pauli 03-09-2004 06:35 PM

sirpelidor, if I knew i would fix it. I am not stupid, YES i put the bios in boot from cd. I wouldnt be saying that if I didn't.

Hehe, witeshark the best way in the world to avoid viruses in windows is not to have the internet :) I dont have the net at home anymore, I was on it too much, but soon im gonna get an old laptop, format it put on windows and deepfreeze it :) If I need the net ill go on that and no amtter what virus goes on it, it wont hurt me :)

holy pauli, chill the *beep* out with that *beep*ing attitude dog, just trying to help as a linux commuity here, how the hell would I know if you are stupid or not if you can't even compile a program from source and need rpm for it.

I can tell you right off my back here, i'm dumb ok.... because my distro come with supermount, and me: the dumb ass disable such feature and rather mount by myself, and edit /etc/fstab....

I guess I gotta open a new thread a complain about supermount from mdk someday if i'm bored enough

I bet the Linux disk boots fine. Its the XP cd. Its picky. Deosn't like MBRs that have been near FreeBSD and Linux (at least certain distros - shades of LindowsOS - methinks Billy-boy doesn't like the name-riding! Go, Michael, go! I don't care if your OS costs monthly! You kick some market-share butt!). I bet it also doesn't like to deal with Partition Magic either. Its a control thing (hence the '98 floppy solution)
