Why do Web addresses and files always use latin alphabet?

Sometimes I run into Web sites in other languages and am suprised that they still use the latin alphabet for folder and file names. Now, I experimented a bit and was able to make some files and folders using a different alphabet. The files behaved jsut like any other file would, although I had trouble using them in the terminal, because I have a QWERTY keyboard. These can even be browsed in Mozilla Firefox by opening file:///. So why do I never see folders and files online written in different alphabets?

Sadly URL still don't support any characters beyond ASCII and it is possible to configure a terminal to display UNICODE. However, when thinking about web pages (or a client server communication) I think you need to have it configured both ends for it to work when using ssh or ftp over the terminal.

So it has become a too hard or too random as to whether it will work or not. So most people just use the basic configuration.

There may also be restrictions on the various protocols, I'm not certain. I know that URL's can't yet support UNICODE and possibly there is the same problem with STMP, FTP, DNS etc.
