dog I can recommend two really good and free word processors:
  1. AbiWord
  2. OpenOffice Writer.

The regular OpenOffice system for Mac OS X is an X11 based application, but it still works very well. The only issue I found was that you have to run a small utility to enable OpenOffice to access all of your installed fonts. But after that all is fine. There is a port of OpenOffice for the Mac called NeoOffice.

It basically wraps the OpenOffice product inside of a Swing-based Java application so it does not need to run inside of X11. It works fine as well; however, it is based upon an older version of the OpenOffice code base, so if you want all the latest-and-greatest features you need to run the regular version.

P.S. - I had tried to post links to the download sites for everything, but the forum wouldn't let me because I haven't made enough posts yet... :-( Have to work on that!
