the mcleodnine spends most of its days on the West Coast of Canader where at the moment it is making a pitiful attempt to snow.

you'd think we'd at least have one or two penguins from the antarctic...

acid_kewpie 12-05-2001 05:24 PM

no, you see the penguin is not as evolved as the human race, consequently they would have no concept or understanding of a computer and what it represents if they were to be introduced to one.

kinda like texans generally ;-)

still a secretary?

oh, and anyway the polar bears suck the electricity grid dry from their macs, toasted sandwich makers and 3 bar fires.

[please ignore geographical inconsistencies.. it's just a crap joke]

i'd try to be insulted, but i'm the one answering phones for people who more or less support your theory.... *sigh*

at the moment... yes, but the interview went really well (i think)... won't know anything till next week tho. it's hard to keep a straight face when the suit doing the interview asks if i know how to use ms-windows very well... it's a db job, and the guy was patronizingly trying to find out what i know about ms access... so i went off on a nice lengthy spiel about the sql backend that pretty much left him intellectually castrated for the rest of the interview. ...course... i was kinda bluffing in that i'm only half-sure that access uses sql as the backend. he obviously didn't know any better tho. i got along really well with the IT manager tho... i hope he's the one making the hiring decisions :)

actually i have done tons of support back in the days, and i tell you who really didn't know computers were people from up north, in the new england area, now i am not saying everyone up there doesn't know computers, but from what i have seen and dealt with, the majority of them are up there.. even the people from tennessee were smarter than most of those people.. so acid.. have you ever been to texas?? probably brainwashed like the rest of the universe thinking we only have old ghost towns, tumbleweeds blowing across the street.. that type of thing everyone sees in the movies.. :) sorry, just felt i had to stick up for my state again..

btw... England rocks..especially music from there, except the rolling stones, those guys need to retire. if it wasn't for england, we wouldn't have this great country of our own.

Thymox 12-06-2001 06:21 AM

I think you'll all find that the evolutionary ladder that an animal takes might not necessarily be the same as the one which we took. Take the koala, for instance. I seem to remember a very minor debate as to whether we should allow them to have decent job in the city.

acid_kewpie 12-06-2001 07:58 AM

no, i've never been to texas, and i've nothing against it whatsoever.. but you knew that. i've been to disneyland (world? ..can't remember) and sea world, so i think you'll find i know ALL there is to know about america that there could ever be!

English music can rock. But i conversly listen to American stuff. Detroit / Chicago scene mainly. more interesting than most alternative british music... feel free to nick any of my mp3's: http://cakenet.dynu.com/mp3 and actually if anyone can see if my server is set up stupidly, please let me know! I'd recommend the new Papa M album, 'Whatever, Mortal' very nice, featuring will oldham on backing for most of it.

isa... you really think it's a good idea to humiliate your potential employer??? well, on your own head be it!

cool, yeah, i knew that.. but just giving you grief. yeah, anyone who goes to disneyland, that so reflects us americans... especially goofy.
that's cool. it seems i guess to some other peoples music is more interesting, maybe cause were tired of our own.. :) i'l dip in and see what you have sometime.

taz.devil 12-06-2001 02:10 PM

I suppose I must be surprised at all the Texans and UK members. But maybe that's me since i'm the only one i've seen in an actual IT driven city...I know Microsoft lives here, but the funny thing is that most of the workers won't admit it! LOL

At first I took offense at this. I live in Atlanta; we've got a big IBM regional HQ and Earthlink. Then I remembered we also have Delta, Coke, and this whole 'Gone with the Wind' thing that everyone thinks of first.

Then again, look at where RedHat is HQ'ed, Raleigh North Carolina?!

Still liking the Pacific northwest there Taz?

trickykid 12-06-2001 03:14 PM

i think texas is the one of the biggest IT driven states.. got Dell, Compaq, Nortel Networks, AMD.. Texas Instruments... and many others.. lots of dot.coms in the Dallas and Austin area too..

hey... he was patronizing me... and he was wearing a tie. besides... suits always hate techies. it's evolutionary or something. anyway, that was just the hr guy doing initial screening, i think. the tech manager who interviewed me was really cool... i'm hoping that his opinion is the one that matters.

Stephanie 12-11-2001 10:32 AM

I'm from the state of Arizona in the United States. I dont like Arizona though, but I moved here with my dad and then I got a boyfriend, so it kept me here.

Although now that I dropped his sorry butt, I am considering a move to Southern California (beach girl at heart), or simply going on a long, much deserved vacation to Europe or the Caribbean. I am pretty young, so I want to experience more of life while I still am, and before I have a family.

As far as the music is concerned, I like American alternative for general listening, but believe it or not, I really like to groove and dance to European techno / electronica. I dont like most American pop and dance music. Unfortunately, that is all they play at the clubs down here, so I prefer to go to raves (legal and illegal ones :) .

gui10 12-11-2001 02:20 PM

hey i see 3 asians in the poll... guess i'm not the only one.

i'm from singapore.

for those who don't know, it's a tiny geological dot that spans an extremely vast area of 42km by 24km nestled somewhere in the middle of south east asia. in fact, if u decide to move from the east side of the island to the west, u might just overshoot and end up having to live on a dinghy...

we don't even have enough land to call ourselves a city, much less a state... so there are times when i don't know how to fill up a form on the internet  ... oddly enough, we do have enough spunk to call ourselves a NATION.

the in-thing for music here right now is j-pop, although i believe it's already on a decline... trance seems to be on the upturn.

as for IT-driven, the whole island is wired up to broadband, tho i think not everyone subscribes to it. it is not uncommon to see dinghy dwellers slowly hooking up their 28.8 modems in the morning and wait patiently for the web pages to load as the sun sets the NEXT day...

disclaimer: these comments are greatly exaggerated and are meant to be amusing. it does not in any way seek to detriment the fine city state cum nation nestled in the (blah blah above) that goes by the name of singapore. heck, i live here!

Stephanie 12-12-2001 09:55 AM

I always thought Singapore would be a neat place to visit.

Hey, if you wanted a nice quiet vacation in little old England, Cornwall's your best bet! There's buggar-all here except for grass, cows, hills and a lot of beaches which kick ass for surfing. Hell, Cornwall is one big beach (I'm not kidding, it's not a particularly wide county - surrounded by water, ah, it's bliss). I'm sure the rest of then English posters on this forum will agree!

Stephanie 12-14-2001 10:20 AM

I plan to visit Europe this next year. There are many places i want to visit, and I will have to see if my travel plans I made would allow a brief stop in Cornwall.

Just a little gripe:mad:

well, sorry.. but as i see it.. there are 7 continents so i listed them.. i didn't want to list all 140 or more countries.. and if i did list just britain, and the rest of the continents.. that wouldn't seem fair to pick them out of everyone else's home country. :D

gui10 12-17-2001 12:59 AM

hey yea Recoil... ease up on the patriotism :p
think of it as a more geographical distinction than a socio-political one... it's just a poll that is meant to be meaningful to the person who put it up, not to the people polling.

after all, if u notice, the poll is about CONTINENTS and not NATIONS... and UK is officially not considered a CONTINENT while Australia IS a CONTINENT and a NATION at the same time.

another example to calm your ruffled feelings:
my very own country, Singapore! too small to even be a city... yet we are a nation. well, it's asia i voted... i don't think Singapore would ever have the audacity to call itself a continent :D

trickykid 12-17-2001 01:03 AM

thank you gui10.. you said that quite well..

i am just suprised not to see anyone from south america.. isn't linux suppose to be kind of big there.. or gaining popularity.

anyways.. next time i will include United States and then just continents, since i am from there... would that be fair.. nah, didn't think so.

Aw, come on Tricky, when you mentioned this poll back on the Taz's(?) distro poll, I thought we were going to get a country breakdown cross-referenced with distro preference so I could see if my theory of a Slackware Australia was accurate.

Honestly, Recoil, Tricky, I live in the American southeast that just thinks its a seperate nation, so I'm more than happy to be classified by continent.

Cheers,

Finegan

Good point, I don't exactly need a color chart to know the sky is blue. I'm just wondering why, not the sky thing, but why Slack seems to rule Oz?

I haven't used Slack (although I intend to eventually), and I'm from Australia......

I am surprised at that as well, I thought that Mandrake would be more popular here.

I know a fair few people who use Mandrake as their distribution of choice, and the $5 Linux CD's at the swapmeets are normally Mandrake or Redhat, from what I've seen.......

that is just my own observations however.....

Aussie 12-19-2001 12:31 AM

The bloke who does the linux cd's at the markets around here has all the distro's apart from the latest suse, he even has the available BSD's and games/application cd's...including one with the complete collection of Flight Gear packages. All done with printed cd's and jewl case inserts.

Stephanie 01-04-2002 11:43 AM

I personally use Mandrake, with a custom kernel.

I have no real intention of using Slack.. nothing personal, but I think I will try to do a LFS setup on one of my virtual machines, just to play.

Trust me, you have it so much better :p
