Where are all the friggin Moderator's responses?????
 

I know this will likely stop any responses to my posts at all, and it is likely wrong to frag a free service BUT - Are there any moderators on this site at all - there are literally tons of questions being asked and tons of no responses - I have made 5 post all about different issues over the last couple of weeks and I only have had 1 response - that being some guy saying to give up as he had the same issue and no one responded to his post either!!! I DONT GET IT - I did all what is asked - searching this site for other similar and FAQ's and all 5 posts have never been answered - I thought the linux family's goal was to help each other out - but I am starting to wonder if the moderators even look at any of these posts!!!! At this site anyway!!!! - and the the only replys to posts that I can see is a lot of guesses from people with the same issues :tisk:

I try to respond to people if I can help or if I have seen a similar issue before - and people really do appreciate any responses they get to their post and you never know - what you think may work or not may actually fix or point a person in the right direction - Hence what the moderators of these site are supposed to do!!! But it seems the norm on this forum site to just skip past issues that you may have an idea on. With all the people running Linux in the world it is very hard to believe that some one some where has not had a same or similar issue before. - I am really starting to understand why newbie linux users give up on this OS - and that is 100% our faults!!!! :tisk:

Since when is it the moderators job to remove the goose eggs? If you got no answer, maybe nobody has an answer.

mods don't answer the questions nobody else does...they kinda keep things running smoothly, while answering the ones they do know...it's a community kinda thing...everyone helps everyone else...mods included. heck, i've even seen mods get help from time to time...like homey said...it's very possible nobody had an answer to your question...after 24 hours, you can bump it so it's at the top again, to maybe get seen by a whole new crowd...just a suggestion...

I am guessing that if you start threads with titles like "Where are all the friggin Moderator's responses?????" you are going to hear from some real soon :D

like this time we have this thread in linux software sectiona n this is a discussion so we have this in wriong section and soon a moderator will shift this thread to general section

As the others have stated, it isn't the moderators job to answer questions.

Secondly, you've been defeating the way the board works. By, reposting to your own questions, the question does not show up as an unanswered question. If you haven't noticed, unanswered questions are brought to the top of the forums every once in a while.

If you have specific questions about Mandrake, maybe you should ask in the Mandrake forum.

Sorry if you are frustrated by some of your posts getting fewer responses than you'd like. Please keep in mind however that LQ is a 100% volunteer effort, where everyone (including mods) tries to help out others in their spare time. While the goal of the site is to try to have as many questions get answered as possible, and get answered as quickly as possible, some questions may take longer than others before a response is received. If you post a question and it does not receive any response within 24 hours, it is permissible to bump your own thread (meaning to post a reply to it yourself) so that it shows recent activity. There are no guarantees however that every question will get a response; again, everyone participating on this website is a volunteer who's just trying to help out fellow Linux users as best they can.

Regarding your question about what are moderators supposed to do - in general, mods have responsibility for keeping discussions on topic and moving in a positive direction, and we try to keep things orderly via a small number of maintenance actions (such as moving a thread if it's posted in the wrong forum, or closing a thread if it's a double post or somehow does not conform to the LQ Rules, such as advertising) -- J.W.

I had a problem with my smoothwall
I asked here, at the smoothwall forum and at another forum
with no answer for about four or five months
Thats not a fault of the forums
its just that my problem was very unusual and in the end I found the solution myself and posted the answer to the problem in all 3 forums to help anyone else with the problem

You just have to get used to the fact that some problems are going to confound everybody because not everyone with a problem describes it accurately enough to give clues to those in the know what the solution might be.

In fact reading some "help me pleeeeze" post is extremely frustrating as no hardware is described, symptoms are not described accurately, the location isn't given, the person hasn't done any research themselves .........

Sorry but I can't recommend a better forum. This one is about as good as it gets, and the mods do a pretty good job really.

I have to say that when you have forums that are popular, as this one is. Sometimes posts can get pushed 3 pages down in a matter of hrs on the weekends. I rearly get past the first couple of pages and have already been reading for an hr.

I had some trouble at first here trying to find post that I had responded to, wanting to see if it worked out, they just got lost. Finally figured out I could search with my user ID and respond that way.

I know Linux can be frustrating ( I have used it since Redhat 6.0) and have had more then my share of problems getting this monster to work. There were not to many forums like this around. Mostly digging through books and NG's to get an answer.

I say. Keep trying. If it was easy. It'd be easy.

It's a conspiracy. Everyone is out to get you. All the moderators sit at the desks laughing evil laughs over how much fun it is to ignore you. Oh, yes. They do look at your post. In fact, they know the answers to most of your questions, but they won't answer because they just don't like you.

thesonic1, I just looked at you profile. You've started 11 threads and only three have 0 responses. It's entirely possible that no one who saw them knew the answer. When I get 0 responses I don't sulk about it and start threads to complain that I'm not being given enough free help.

No one is making you stay here. If you want to go somewhere else, then do so. A quick Google search for 'Linux forums' should turn up plenty of alternatives.

That said, I'd hate to see you leave. LQ is a great community, but sometimes you have to be a little patient. I seriously doubt anyone is intentionally snubbing you, and keep in mind that we're all volunteers. We do our best, so hang in there and remember that we're all in this together :)

Loads of questions get no responses. Possibly because of the titles or that they are not well enough explained, or simply because no one knows the answer.

"But what can I do to help people help me?", I hear you cry. Well, the best thing to do is research. Sitting and waiting for a response is always counter-productive and frustrating. Search Google and Google/Linux, search the forums, go to TLDP, read up on Linux and finally, try a few things. And, most importantly, post your research - someone may read it and say "oh, I know what the fix is".

Threads like this are never the answer.

A moderators job is not only to just answer members questions.. what did you think, that we got paid to be a moderator.. hahahhahahahahahah!!!!! We're just like every other member on this community site, we just have a few more privileges than the rest of you peeps!

In addition to the points already listed in XavierP's post, let me also add that the #1 thing (IMHO) that all LQ'ers can do to increase the chances of a helpful response is to simply provide a clear, detailed description of the problem you are facing. This includes:

* using a meaningful thread title (eg, "Configuring USB keyboard under Suse 9.2" is good, "Help" or "Urgent Problem!!!!" is not)

* providing important background info, such as the distro you're using, the action you are attempting to perform, what steps you have taken so far, and what system responses and/or error messages you've received. The idea here is that nobody else can see what you're seeing on your PC, and therefore the only information that anyone else will have about the problem is what you've written in your post. If the only description you give is (for example) "I'm having problems with my Linux and I can't get it to work. Please help" then it should be no surprise that the post does not attract many replies, apart from requests to provide more info. In short, help us help you by providing that background info up front.

* be patient. There are LQ'ers across the world, and it's possible that someone who can answer your question happens to live on the other side of the planet from where you are. If you don't receive any responses at all, it's permissible to bump your own thread after 24 hours.

Again, there's no guarantee that every question will get a response, but at least in my experience, providing a clear and detailed description will tend to produce the best results. Just my 2 cents -- J.W.
