Where's the darknet ?

This post will appeal to many more people than I have the intention to address... And that is why I cannot post in “Security”. Feel free to ignore the thread, once it becomes awkward; I will...

Once, in another life, - and AFAIS on another planet- , there were people who read, then understood the docs on nym.alias.net (I am trying this as a filter). That was before Word-viruses occupied Usenet and people where still feeling responsibility for their own actions and the usability of Internet... Okay. Some did.

The development of GUI front-ends to Cypherpunk, Mixmaster, PGP and finally “The Reliable Remailer” might have been a mistake, as they appear to mark the beginning of general decline. They were part of the cause or just accidentally appeared at the wrong moment.

I have bailed out of translating stuff to German shortly before the last Reliable-version was released and since live on my own “Island”, try to be unpredictable and put myself in arbitrary “cases” in an attempt to fool those who try the same with me, anyway.

I completely missed Mixminion, I2P and am using Tor just like anybody else who does not have a clue. My Internet-connection being terribly slow anyway, it does not make a difference. LQ, for example, I visit exclusively with Torbrowser and “torify” or “torsocks” have been.., “appear to be” quite useful functional in a way.

Occasionally I stumble upon Mixmaster-support in Mutt and hope comes up... This lasts for a few minutes, only.

And every now and then, an interested family-member asks about the Darknet. Because they heard something or have been victim of identity theft. Like in “What is the Darknet?”. Yeah.

All that. All that I listed, above. My question is technical, though:

What works? What is state-of the art anonymizing technology in the way that we understood Mixmaster ?

A long time ago, I got interested in “Freenet”. The setup completed I was confronted with a huge garbage heap of Porn and auto-promotion. What a waste... What a waste!

Edit: I still like this text a lot and link it here, so it lives on for another while: Remailer Vulnerabilities. A balance act between paranoia and dry observation. Maybe as an example of what I am missing...

I'm not exactly sure of the question you're asking or if there really even is one but regarding "where things are" and "what's missing" all I care to say is diversity and layers... the right tool for specific jobs.
