There are a few. MPlayer is goood! The best player there is period.
The gimp to is an killer app.
And there is much software I woulden't qualify as a killer app, but which is just good. blue fish, k3b, kile, karamba, gkrellm, mozilla, konqueror, xmms and a hell of a lot more. Did I mention the veriouse desktop/window managers; windowmaker, fluxbox, enlightenment, kde, gnome.
Did I mention server software like apache and samba.

I use Xine. I'm happy with it, it plays everything I want, and yet I keep hearing about MPlayer. Why is it better? What can you make me say to switch (or at least use both?)

mplayer has mencoder, can encode your stuff at very good quality and extremely fast, i compared it with windows on the same machine, 11 fps vs 50 fps
and it can play nearly every file format out there!

I recently read about a free linux application for browsing the galaxy ( http://www.shatters.net/celestia). Sounds cool, but I haven't had the time yet to check it out.
When I first read your post I thought you were looking for an application that is keeping people like me from switching completely to linux, because there is no port or replacement yet.
I could name a few in the domains of my hobbies (church, music) as well as my work (graphical software development tools).
Greetings

Xine can play all of the file formats I've ever had need to use. As for encoding, I use transcode. Has anyone done speed tests mencoder vs. transcode?
I'm not averse to switching to MPlayer, it just seems like unnecessary hassle if I don't need it. But everyone just raves about how great it is.

to switch to mplayer, just do ./configure, make, make install no hassle - just need to look at the help to see the tonnes of options for encoding and playing
it can even encode off the tele
never heard of transcode, will run a couple of tests later and post them back up here

If you want gmplayer,i.e,if you want to play mplayer otherthan from console, then give '--enable-gui' option with ./configure.otherwise,you will have to run like 'mplayer blahblah.mpg' from console and will not be able to close the console window while you use mplayer.
Code:
./configure --enable-gui
--arun

Ehhh..... not really a killer app, per se, but if the definition of a killer app is one that attracts you to a specific platform then it would have to be the CLI. I know, it's not an app, it's a collection of tools, but hey, it does what I need it too, and it is one of the main reasons that I continue to use Linux.

gFTP and/or Camorama. Both are far better than what I was used to dealing with in Windows.
