What was your first job?

well I'm 16 and i live in nyc and so far finding a job is nearly IMPOSSIBLE so i figured ah what the hell maybe some people on this forum can help me out by telling me what your first job was so that teens like me can have a idea :P

Thanks .. much appreciated

trickykid 05-28-2005 02:09 PM

Fastfood... and do I recommend it for teenagers, yup! Bottom line, its a job that pays you and gets your foot in the door into getting any type of work experience and usually requires no prior experience.

Mr. New 05-28-2005 03:12 PM

you can get a job at age 14 here where I live, I might get one this summer
but I'm kind of shy:(

yeah, but some places require you to be 16(McDonalds Included) but I can work at grocery stores. kids need to work so they can afford a car when they turn 15/16

I raked blueberries in Maine when I was 14, the summer after I waited tables at a local restaurant, and now I lifeguard at the Y. I live in rural maine, so it's likely to be more difficult in NYC. But look into local coffee shops, etc. Call people up even if there's no advertisment for an opening. The more you do it the more comfortable you'll get.

AlexV 05-28-2005 05:01 PM

I started working at 15 as an Aide for a small public library. At 16 I was promoted to Clerk and took over admin duties for our local network when our previous alpha-geek moved on to become the director of her own library. In the two years since then we've gone from 0 to 25% of our computers running Linux with more expected, installed free wireless Internet, and made popular open source software such as OpenOffice, Firefox, and The GIMP available on our public Internet PCs.

Keep your eyes open! You never know where you might be able to make a difference :)

Fruit-picking under the boiling sun, aged 14. Shitty job. Attendant in swimming-pool. Various jobs
I swore I'd never have to do again. And never did. All that back in the 70s.
Don't go to work. Learn and study. You'll get money and consideration.

scoops98 05-28-2005 05:45 PM

Planting cauliflowers and watering plants, no stress at all {but poor pay} those were the days.As samael26 said get some qualifications under your belt as soon as possible. Only do the cr*ppy type jobs to get yourself through college, it makes life easier in the long run. {failing that, whilst deciding why not travel? see the world, its a big place out there}.

dominedi 05-28-2005 05:47 PM

gas station attendant, well paid, and interesting experience but at the evening i was tired dead (of course not a self service station)

Blinker_Fluid 05-28-2005 06:10 PM

First paying job was milking cows...

slackMeUp 05-28-2005 07:55 PM

Working at a movie theater.

Free popcorn and soft drinks... free movies... shitty pay but it was never busy or stressful.

That was the life.

My first job was at a grocery store. I went on to become a cashier, then worked in the pharmacy, then produce, then photo, the dairy.
I was all over the place, but it bought me my first pc, was decent pay for someone with no bills.

Fishmonger @ 17 man, that job litterally stinks, I would ride the bus home after work and no one would sit within two rows of me. i could hear people whispering "what's that smell" all the way home :)

I'm trying to remember back that far.

I guess my first job was melting lead and making lead bars to go into a linotype machine.
And then running the thing and setting type. That really was setting type! And I melted and cast of lot of lines of type.

Wow... Coming up this year is a linotype class!

Here's a bit from wikipedia.

Edit: As far as pay, I had a place to live and food to eat and my dad wouldn't beat me if I worked.

speel 05-28-2005 10:08 PM

is it better to call to see if their hireing or go there face to face?

IBall 05-28-2005 10:27 PM

It will ALWAYS impress prospective employers to go and ask in person. Make sure you are neat and well presented, take a copy of your CV along, and pick your time carefully.

I worked at a donut shop at age 16. Only paid minimum wage but it gave me a lot of people experience. You'd be surprised about how ticky people are first thing in the morning about their donuts. I didn't eat a lot of donuts, still don't, but drank a lot of coffee.

age 17?

microsoft/linux 05-29-2005 09:14 AM

True, it's probably more impressive to go in person to look for a job. I've just gotten in the habit of calling. Usually they tell me there is not position open. But if there is, then I go in and ask for an application. Just another thought

vharishankar 05-29-2005 09:16 AM

I would give some advice to people in their teens. Study! Study as much as you can and study hard. Do part-time work as a hobby if you must, but study.

You'll never get the teenage again. It's the best age for studying. Once you're into your 20s you'll find life hard going, more serious and much more stressful. Not ideal for studying.

Studying (in whatever field you desire) should come first. You always have 40-50 good years of work-life ahead once you cross your teens, but you might never get back the freshness of your teens at which age, education is so much easier to pursue.

to qoute you "nude-beach" "age 17" is that legal where your at? or did you not actually see the people?

(yeah I live in the middle of a continent never been to any beach on a ocean)

Megamieuwsel 05-29-2005 01:53 PM

Quite legal : Being 16 or older is a requirement for full-time employment and , per our judicial system , also the mark of being "sexually fullgrown and responsible".(And there's no real law or anything describing a minimum age for watching "Adult Material" either , just a social norm , that differs per area/village/person)
The nude beaches over here are public area.(but the differences with the rest of the beaches are dimished to near-nonexistence , due to the diminishing of material in swimwear....)
It's not like a nude beach is a live-pornshow or such...

I started off as a grocery clerk at age 15, soon after that moved up to cashier. The big money came after I robbed the store and invested the proceeds in my new software idea

microsoft/linux 05-29-2005 03:26 PM

no, never. My parents may have hired me to do some stuff around the house, but not a real job. Well no, that's not entirely true, I was probably baby-sitting when I was 12
