what is this SCO dispute all about?
 

"The worm was also programmed to flood the Web site of The SCO Group Inc. beginning on Feb. 1 with requests in an attempt to crash its. SCO's site has been targeted in other recent attacks because of its threats to sue users of the Linux operating system in an intellectual property dispute."

This paragraph is from an article taken from AOL news about some new e-mail worm. But screw the worm!! What is all this about linux users being sued?! Does anyone know the story behind this ? What is the SCO?

Anyway my point is that doing this stuff is what causes the nice hackers out there to be feared. SCO will have its due when the time is right.

SCO is a corporation that makes a flavor of Unix. It was bought out by Caldera and then Caldera became rebranded as the SCO Group, with Darl McBride as the new CEO and president. SCO claims that the Linux kernel uses some of their proprietary UNIX source code and distributes it for free without SCO's permission. SCO now wants the Linux companies and Linux users "UNIX Licensees" to pay them a fee for a license to use their "intellectual property." :-( This has infuriated much of the Linux world and a lot of the regular world too. We don't think McBride nor SCO will get something out of this lawsuit except for the hatred of Linux users.

Norton may be better in terms of completeness, but AVG is free and Norton customer service has been reprehensible this week.

Here's what I understand of SCO's claims against the Linux community (Please correct me if I am mistaken).

1. The Linux kernel contains code created by SCO.

2. The GPL is illegal (main argument here I've seen is its anti-capitalist)

Thus, since Linux contains SCO's code (claim 1), and since the GPL (under which Caldera (SCO) released multiple versions of linux, ostensibly licensing rights to 'its' IP) is illegal (claim 2), anyone not paying SCO a tribute has an illegal copy of SCO's IP and is subject to suit for infringement.

I don't think so. Here's why: there have simply been to many distros w/too many new Kernels to ever justify SCO's complaint. My personal conclusion is simply that SCO dismissed Linux thinking there was no way it would amount to crap --and has recently regretted that decision...

Also, Darl McBride wants to bring SCO out of bankruptcy. You know, there's a reason for its junk bond status! ;-)
