Statistics like that 1 in 44 vs. 1 in 2 really point out how good we've gotten at not dying, not that we're at any more risk at getting cancer in any particular moment in time. Cancer is what you die from when you manage to not die from anything else.

Efficiency. Technical progress allows more efficient use of resources, thereby creating more of a particular end product, lowering its price and thereby increasing demand and use. Makes life easier for us. Whether that is ultimately good for a particular person is up to them. Freedom from want, for example, allows time to develop spiritual philosophies (religions). Whether that is a good thing is up to each of us to decide.
