What is the most reliable online search engine?

Used to be that if I entered an exact phrase into a search engine, that engine would look for the very exact phrase.

Now I notice that this is no longer the case--no matter what "advanced options" I use, the engines use all the components of the phrase separately.

Are there any search engines that would find just the phrase (dutifully enclosed in quotation marks), and nothing else, unless asked for?

Thanks, Hearthstone.

Can you give example of enquoted phrase which give not exact what you entered for Google search engine, as I usually get what I search (however I get sometimes weird results when cannot use quotes).

Also this thread is not suitable for Linux forum, should be moved to Non-*nix forum.

"roesli.gif" - web search results were mostly anything else but roesli.gif.
Better results in Images search.

The point is--which search engine (I might not know of all of them) would be better at delivering results for just the term/phrase in quotes?

Thanks, Hearthstone.

Search engines in general, used to be a laborious construction of explicit meta-characters and other typography to extract very elicit and exact info.
Seems to me now-a-days, search engines are much more forgiving and it seems to be any attempt to use the "old school" tricks, now have dubious results.

I generally don't search using quotes in search strings.

Edit:
roesli.gif type:gif - fails miserably at gurgle.
roesli type:gif - is more what I'd expect.

Using your example (roesli.gif) it got many correct finds.

I searched "roesli.gif" on Google and get no more 10 results (with linuxquestions.org on top :) ), but all pages have that exact phrase in text or as part of link. In my opinion it found what I looked.

trevoratxtal's http://privatelee.qrobe.it/images gave the best results--more than any other engines.
The very particular "roesli.gif" I have not found yet.

Thank you all!

Sincerely - Hearthstone.
