i didn't understand your enswer so :
if you meen saving as doc and then trieng to open the with OO :
all function are looking really funney.
the numbers are above the letters (so you can't read the exprations).
also any aligment (like RTL=right to left) will be messed up (rtl will become ltr)

sorry for bad english

That's what I meant. Many times OO can handle native docs okay. But looks like this time doesn't work so well. I don't have Office 2000 anymore. But I would look at what types of documents OO can import and what types of docs Office can export and see if there's any others that match up...

By recording and extending a macro?

Just use the .doc format (MS Office's main format). OOo can open .doc

What? The formulas? Yea, it should be able to open (guessing). Saving it in RTF, txt, or that other stuff will loose the formulas, .doc should keep em.

[OpenOffice] should be able to open .doc [files of any Microsoft Word version without loss]
Obviously, OpenOffice is not able to do so in every case.

- Mainly, that's because Microsoft hasn't published what can be contained in a .doc file, and how such files are structured, exactly.

Large portions of OpenOffice's (and other tools's) abilities to open .doc files are due to reverse engineering and just applying heuristics.

That's why there is an urgent need (and a strong trend) to use standardized (= publically documented) and interoperable Office document formats, instead.

- Here's some further information on that issue.

Basically the Word document loads fine in OOo, but the embedded formulae don't. Is that right?

What program were the formulae written with? If it's MathType (or the stripped down version of MathType that's bundled with MS Office) then have you tried changing the inport/export options? I've never been entirely sure what these options do, but it might be worth trying.
