Just listened to Ruiner by NIN for the first time in a few years -- I won't link to a YouTube or any such as that since it really has to be heard in good quality. To this au it has my favourite guitar solo even though I'm not sure it even is guitar.

Revisiting Arise now, probably the first extreme metal album I ever heard. Good God, this is incredible, I feel reborn. I remember falling in love with "Desperate Cry" and "Under Siege" many years ago [I don't think I knew the names of either song at the time since I just had a copied cassette, possibly with no inlay]. This band have reminded me what I first loved about metal and which so many other bands now attempt to imitate.
You're welcome. Indeed, their albums were some of the most extreme and aggressive in their time. Desperate Cry always gives me chills. Territory, from Chaos AD, was my first taste of the band when I heard it on MTV (when MTV played music Lol). Roots was their last album with Max as the frontman, and you can hear the shift toward a modern sound mixed with some world styles, which became the style of Soulfly.
So true about imitators. There is as much lack of originality in music today as there is in Hollywood. Given the quality of many of today's new metal bands, I still prefer the older bands such as Sepultura, Venom, Obituary, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Pantera, to name a few.

Sepultura - Schizophrenia

Great record so far, hadn't heard it before. I find it so difficult to find metal albums that interest me these days but I'm really enjoying this early Sepultura rediscovery. dracolich - I forgot about Obituary, thanks for reminding me.

For some reason you made me think of Believer, give them a go. Especially Sanity Obscure.

Schizophrenia is one of their milestones, their last album recorded in Brazil before moving to US.

Obituary and Bolt Thrower are the only death metal bands I still listen to regularly, largely because their music is not much about death. Bolt Thrower have always been amazing with songs about warfare and honor on the battlefield. After 1993 or '94 Obituary began to sound and feel more like a thrash metal band...in a good way. If you haven't heard Inked in Blood yet, give it a go. They owned Hellfest in 2015! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxR3kww7A_s

Yesterday I listened to Danzig 6, aka Satan's Child. After getting into Venom a few years ago it became easy to hear how much Venom influenced Danzig, Slayer and other metal bands during the rise of thrash/extreme metal.
