What could block throughput for eBay?

Certain tasks take minutes (I give up - they could take forever). The opening page, when I log in, will never finish loading (reading the activity icon in the Firefox or Opera tab). I click on something anyway, but the same happens for that page. I wanted to send a seller a message but the window spent minutes opening. It was in reply to a thread, so I went to the message in my inbox, used the reply button there, which eventually worked (while the original attempt was still working.) Throughput elsewhere is fast. Monitoring bandwidth use with ifconfig shows far too little data (a few K/minute) to be the cause.

This happens in both Firefox and Opera, has been happening for a few weeks. Lynx works, but doesn't support Javascript. I search for items in Lynx, save the URIs, open them in Firefox.

When it happens to me, anywhere, not just eBay, where it did happen less than a week ago, I just try a different browser or profile. Latest FF & all Chromium UIs stink, so those are last tried, and usually get past the block, after which I try to go back to whichever browser I started from. Usually I write those failures off to NoScript or hosts file blockage and forget about it until it happens again. I have no good words for overall internet usability, e.g. bloated, hindering, rude, anti-U11Y, frustrating & more.
