VOIP phone for windows that understands sip, anybody?

During the big skype crash I again got a shot at converting my friends to an sip service, but no luck. Nothing worked.
Wengophone: Didn't connect, doesn't show you what your sip is... at least he didn't find it. I use ekiga, wengophone crashes constantly on my pc.

Windows Live Messanger: Is supposed to be able to do sip calls. But it's just wrong, you can tell once you start installing it (I installed it on a virtual machine to help out).
Again, no luck finding a way to add an sip contact.

The last ray of hope was the win port of ekiga, but it didn't download... Anyway, it's still beta and GTK bound. There has to be something that works natively in windows!

I can do a google search and find 100+ programs that pretend to do that, I would like to hear from someone who actually has got one of those things to work.

Yup. It needs some port between 5000 and 5100... had to forward it on my router... But we didn't even get to that stage.
How does that work with your cell phone? wlan?

Windows Live Messenger - Windows XP

Yes, this thread is a bit old, but still pertinent to my question. Is Windows Live Messenger the standard IM client on Windows XP? If so, does it have SIP capability?

TIA ...
