Video Codecs

If you have a choice between a quicktime movie or a divx avi movie what one would you chose?
What one has better linux support? Do any of them have native linux support (not a win32 codec)?
Divx seems to be smaller*, but does it have as good of quality as quicktime does?
Any other issues between the two?

Thank you.

*edit: after looking around, divx can be quite a bit larger (2x) than the same movie in quicktime format.

I'd take the DivX. Quicktime files *usually* are of a lower resolution intended for streaming from the net. I bet I'm gonna get flamed for that by some people but what the heck.

I'm running Gentoo and have MPlayer installed with divx4linux support and win32 codecs and Xine, of which Xine performs better when the machine is under load IMO.

You could always opt for xvid, an open-source implementation of divx

I agree...divx seems to be a better codec. I believe it's open source (??). I could be wrong.

divx is also ported to more OS's.

there are several divx codecs. ffmpeg and xvid are 2 opensource ones. xvid is looking great lately.
