Does ATI even make drivers for Linux?

I own a fx5200, it is working well with nvidia's drivers. They have very frequent diver released too. Seems to me that ATI card owners need to do a little more work to get their 3d working, not sure why, just an observation. But from what i read, ATI make better 3d cards. Gamers prefer ATI.

without a doubt Nvidia. ATI makes drivers, they are all rpm's, they can be converted to work for non rpm systems, but they are still a massive pain in the ass to work with. I have gotten Nvidia to work on many different distros. I recently got a laptop using an ATI card, I was unable to get the card working, but i have taken a break from installing that card while i wait for suse 9.1 to come from amazaon (just 15 bucks :) ).

Don't get me wrong, there are some great tutorials out there for the ATI drivers, but I would recomend Nvidia any day of the week, its fast, easy and they support the Linux community.

newinlinux - close enough. I also have a 5200 currently. I need one with two VGA ports on it though, thus I was kinda leaning towards that one anyways.

I like ATI better for some reason. I never have another video card other then ATI. ATI does have drivers for linux at there website.

It's basically upi to you. Some people will say nVidia is better while others will say ATI is better like me :)

Nvidia cards does, has better drivers for Linux, even TV-out is officially supported by Nvidia, unlike ATI's(there are a few non-official ati-tvout projects out there, many no longer supported either). ATI are better cards for gaming in Windows, that is. That's not big of trouble, since if you are a serious PC-gamer, most likely you will use Windows anyway :).

However, Nvidia cards are getting power hungry. That's why I'm moving back to console gaming again: More choices of genres, cheaper, etc. I'm tired of upgrading everytime to play a new shooter (Doom 3 might be my last upgrade though). Since my P4 uses a frickin expensive RAM memory (Rambus 184 Pin 800 MHZ) a simple 256MB worthy of RAM give me almost two new consoles or some good multiplayer games for console...

shane25119: actually you can convert rmp's, its done with portage, and the drivers work pretty much fine (I'm not sure, but vegastrike is slow at response time, i set all the settings to low/medium to as high was almost so slow you couldn't even move the mouse :)

I would go with nvidia. I don't like the drivers from ati. For some reason, I don't get as high fps as I do with the same hardware under windows. While with the nvidia drivers, I would atleast get the same performence under windows as under linux.

I second that, ATI's drivers are not half as good as nVidia's are. Although I would prefer open source drivers, this works perfectly fine.
