Users with Sound Blaster cards, please back me up with some info
Really, I just want to know if there is any true audio difference between the new Advanced 24bit sound blaster audio, and the regular, 16bit, Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 $30 card. Is It worth spending the extra $30 ($60 card) and go with the 24bit stuff? Thanks.

you would think that 24 bit is better then 16 bit but if you don't watch movies, play games or do stuff that really requires a good sound card, why bother.
But watch out. I have the Sound Blaster Audigy LS and there is no Linux driving for it. Well there is but it's crappy and I never got it to work. I think Soundblaster live 5.1 has a drive.
I am stuck in the Linux world with no Sound

Wow, thanks. Because that was the card I was about to get. I do lots of multimedia including listening to music and playing games, but I think the SBL! 5.1 16 bit will do me just fine.

Just for info, my card is a Soundblaster Live! 5.1 digital and it seem's to manage great.
It uses either the emu10k1 driver for oss or snd-emu10k1 for alsa (now that I use a 2.6 kernel).
Whenever I've really screwed up my system, when I re-install mandrake, it has a tendency to offer me the Audigy() driver as well, in fact it usually default's to that, but I just change the driver selection to the emu10k1 and bingo, as much noise as I'll ever want from a PC
regards
John

SB Audigy LS and the Dell model of SB Live! will be supported in ALSA 1.0.6.

Other than that, other SB Live and Audigy versions should be well supported with the 'snd-emu10k1' module.

unless you playing music theres probably not much difference but theres always that "MABYE" factor so if you can afford it go with the 24 bit, or if your not gonna play music 16 bit is fine.
I have a soundblaster live 5.1 on my Slackware Music system and it works awesome!!
and on this machine I think its an older soundblaster and it works good.
