FOSS is preferable, but I'm not a zealot.

At work, I have to use Windows. But at home ...

I like to class myself as a FOSS zealot. I have never let anything M$ touch my computer, and hopefully it never will (Grrr!) . However I still have to use proprietary stuff sometimes (eg. at school), and when I do, I generally find it puts me in a very bad mood very quickly!

I just wish the h4rdw4r3 m4k3rz would hurry up and realise that Linux is the way forwards and make drivers and stuff for us poor sorry downtrodden rebels. Then there'd be no reason to not use FOSS!

I use both so I chose 50/50. I see the need for both in the world and don't see any reason they can't coexist.

From a phylosophical viewpoint, the last answer "WE ARE BORG" could apply to OSS as well as it could proprietary. I'm not much of a trekkie, but it is my understanding that the Borg would take a human and put him to use in the best way he would serve the "hive" or whatever they're called. I think they would treat software much the same way, in other words they would use the most powerful, efficient, stable software for the task. So it does stand to reason that the Borg would in fact use Linux.

I chose 50/50, I like to use what seems best for the job, as long as if it's proprietary the company's ethics aren't too questionable

I agree with phil.d.g. While I prefer to use FOSS, I have no problem with the distribution or the using of proprietary software. It is the business practices of the companies which distribute that software that I may have objections to. Windows is a pretty good product; Microsoft has a lot to learn about business ethics.

However, I try to apply this thinking across the board with my assets, not just with software. If a person disagrees with the ethics of a particular company, one should not buy their products.

Im 50/50 for teh same reason as the guys above. I prefer Linux/Unix, but I can respect Windows. I've never gone on a unwarranted "Windows sucks" rant, and like wise for linux. For me its all about preference. FOSS is all good, but honestly, somethings just don't work as well as their proprietary counterparts.

Now eithics are another story...but you gotta use what makes you happy.

I haven't ever gone on an unwarranted "Windows sucks" rant. They've always been warranted.
