USB plugs need re-work
I hated so much the current USB plugs, most types are very easy to get loose and bad contact after some use even the large type A, even worse those multi use cable which rely on a micro plug convert into other type, also one for micro/iphone dual use. I thought type C is the ultimate solution to the problem, but it is not very reliable either, the only good about it is reversible, someone should design a magnetic plug to replace them all.

A while ago a colleague pointed out how bad the USB plug is when compared to the car 'lighter' plug - which, though admittedly using fewer connections, is far more robust and doesn't have to be put in a certain way up.
That got me thinking, something like the well-known 3.5mm or 6.25mm audio jack would work well. They last for years, their sockets don't tend to break when someone trips over the cable, and versions have already been made with 4 or 5 connections. The USB standard could have specified a different size if they needed to differentiate. I doubt I'm the first to have that idea, and given how much effort went into promoting (and, presumably, designing) USB there may well be a good reason it wasn't done that way, but I think it would have been better for most things I see USB used for. |
If you think USB-C is the solution, have a read of this. Arrgggghhh !!!

I have never had a physical problem with a USB plug. And I have a cell phone with USB-C. I loathe USB-C.
As for USB-C, the rationale I heard for it is to make cell phones water resistant for a minute or two (so, I guess, they survive being dropped in the loo). |
