Newbie: UNIX Sound Systems?
 

I only know of two sound systems when it comes to Linux: OSS, and ALSA

ALSA is the newer, better favored system, but is specifically tailored to Linux

OSS is older and is now commercial and proprietary... They have unique licenses for different OSes. For Linux, for example, the non-associated OSS/Free is available in the kernel packages... but then again the page has not been updated for 6 years and I come to wonder if the project is still under way

some operating systems... like NetBSD, it's available for non-commercial use...



But really, is there any decent sound system out there that is not propretary/commercial and is widely supported (or at least compatible) with (more or less) all Unicies + Linux out there?

What about OpenAL / SDL ? Do they count?

Nope they're not sound systems just high level apis to provide access to the sound system, across multiple platforms.

Well wouldn't an API be needed to make programs cross platform? Ihaven't really seen anycross platforms sound systems per say... but, at least until more are available, I suppose an common + popular API would be fine


Let the Os manage it's sound drivers its own way, and use an API to manipulate the sound... sounds reasonable- what APIs are available?
