TV watching and capture in mpeg2 DVD

I installed XawTV, but my picture is grainy and recording is not wanting to work. Does anyone have ideas? It is the only thing, and I mean ONLY thing keeping me from getting rid of Windows as we speak.

As far as the 'grainy' picture, I don't know what to say other than adjust the rabit ears If it's not the antenna's fault, maybe try something along the lines of a signal booster or something (too much interference from the rest of the box?).

For recording, I have found nothing beats mencoder. Hands down it's the best utility for recording TV, especially for scheduled programs. Combine cron with mencoder and you've got yourself a cheap TiVO, sorta.

Cool

why DVD format??? it's huge and you're surely not planning on mastering an entire dvd filesystem for some recorded programs? mencoder does encode to mpeg2 video with the libavcodec package.

and of course, welcome back Stephanie!

Thnx kewpster! Good to hear from you also!

I reason I am wanting to make sure the DVD format is because I need to be able to play my recorded segments on typical home DVD players. Do you know if mpeg2 will play?

BTW- Has anyone heard from Isajera?

well it's a well involved thing to make a dvd, let alone get the rigth formats... mencoder can provide the codecs, but you've got a lot of conventions to follow... thought about VCD?

and nothing form rachel for a long time now, no.

Last we heard, she went off to California for that job and came back supposedly to San Antonio. Few months later asked to be taken off as a moderator.
