Tricky!!!!

i'm bored. im me!

isajera 08-11-2002 01:16 AM

dammit. nevermind.

isajera 08-11-2002 01:23 AM

arrrgh... someone im to me...

bored...
bored...
bored...

MasterC 08-11-2002 01:28 AM

Uh, hello :)

MasterC 08-11-2002 01:32 AM

When I get bored, I pull up www.theonion.com and read a bit. That helps a bit.

Or I go count narcotics, that's time consuming, and keeps you awake.

GT I.N.C 08-11-2002 01:39 AM

when i get bored i go to www.emode.com learn some things about yourself

Mara 08-11-2002 06:16 AM

Wow! Beeing bored? I'd like to be bored. Can someone tell me how to do this? :D

GT I.N.C 08-11-2002 06:23 AM

hahahhaha, i'm a master at being bored, i usually lay down on my bed and stare at the ceiling, its fun at first, but then you get realllllllly bored, but its addictive cause you get to think of things that you wouldn't think of when your busy doing other stuff, in other words, its a form of mediting :P

I'm sorry isa, I didn't catch your post fast enough. :(

What happened to your direct high-speed connection to this site? And your automatic popup screen that shows when someone types your name? Hehehe

:)

The microkernel imbedded in my kneecap to keep my connection alive died with loss of power, I was recharging it at the time. Finegan is working on a way to power that sucker with kinetic energy. :)

Mara 08-15-2002 11:23 AM

How much power does it need? Like one watch or more? :D

... i thought it might have been something like that... :)

He he, do you realise how close to the truth (with the exception of the Finegan bit... I think) you are? I recently (about 6 months ago) did a tiny bit of research into the myoelectrical connectivity of prosthetics and found some really interesting stuff! Related to the kinetic powering bit (but only loosely), some researchers at Washinton University Biorobotics Labs are/have developed some pretty cool pneumatic actuators which are so small that they would make a very good robotic muscle. They are currently (I believe... haven't really kept up with it) researching methods of powering these devices by storing kinetic energy (the actuators are basically small motors).

Also, as far as your direct connection goes: there has already been progress in developing a chemical that could be likened to 'velcro for nerves'. An extract from the CD I had to 'publish' for my project: One end of the protein contains a 'hook' that attached to the integrins on the surface of neurons. At the other end, a sulphur-containing group can bond to the cadmium-sulphide surface of some semiconductors. Such techniques could provide the push needed to propel the 'direct neural interfacing' research into practice..

Sorry if this is a little... erm, off topic, but I just remembered where I put the CD and then this thread fell into my lap. I had to post!

I hope it's not too boring.

MasterC 08-16-2002 04:41 AM

Dude, that's awesome! Cool stuff going on in the world... Thanks Thymox!

Stephanie 08-16-2002 11:09 AM

Thymox,

That is pretty neat! I have and still do study bionics and its related sciences as a hobby, and I would very much like to know where you got some of that info so i can look into it.

i'm not sure that minature pnuematic muscles would do the trick. but, they do have those neato watches that don't need batteries or winding - they turn regular motion into energy. i remember reading something about how they have tiny turbines that reach 5000 revs per second or something insane like that when you move your arm.
... course, i'd be kinda scared that it might blow up or something... what if it overloads if i move my arm too fast?

arlothemoo 08-16-2002 02:02 PM

whew watch that fastball its explosive :-D

Thymox 08-18-2002 06:09 PM

Stephanie (and all others that may be interested), I found most of the information by sheer perseverance (sp?) on Google and using Science Magazine's online journals (susbscription only... my Uni is a subscriber :)). I can't remember all of the urls, but since I had to produce a CD (that contained all of the materials used) to work on any machine, internet connection or not, the articles in question are contained on it. I've uploaded an ISO of said CD to my site.

http://www.thymox.uklinux.net/prosthetics.iso (about 8Mb)

It's quite bland, but as my 'inspector' commented, "you don't need lots of colour when you have lots of information".

Enjoy.

(note: I think that I removed all external links, so I'm affraid the info held within is likely to be a task to find again!)

lol... it's amazing what kind of stuff you can get away with in america...
entertaining. surefire way to kill boredom.
i mean, look at THIS!!!!!!!!

MasterC 08-19-2002 11:29 AM

ba ha ha ha ha, see, I love the Onion! Good one

Cool

arlothemoo 08-19-2002 01:06 PM

just thouhgt id tell everyoen synthetic muscle now goes for less than a prime cut of beef ie: $2/lbs

Stephanie 08-22-2002 02:42 PM

Now I have to ask how you know that, and why did you keep that kind of information even in your head?

Although, that is pretty cheap for an artifical muscle. Or maybe Prime meat is expensive. However you look at it... whatever.

arlothemoo 08-22-2002 06:47 PM

i dunno i just know this stuff...acutally i read it in wired was surprised someone didnt already put it up...but people in my classes always ask how i know things that no one should like the fact that more than 40% of female japanese high school seniors complain of constupation adn 50% of 30 yr old japanese women (it came up in a discussion) or the policy of sweden on gun control while discussing the 5th amnendment...i guess this sort of stuff just gets stuck in my brain

Thymox 08-22-2002 06:51 PM

Join the club, Arlothemoo. Random-Facts-R-Us.

arlothemoo 08-22-2002 07:06 PM

ive decided to not give out too many odd random facts now that im in high school...after all one of my middle school teachers got a little suspicious about just how much i knew about various drugs...apparently i shouldnt know anythgin about extractign pure liquid pcp...

MasterC 08-23-2002 03:21 AM

Drugs, did I hear drugs? Would you like to know why someone is taking a Gram of Zithromax and 250mg IM of Rocephin? And no, it's not nasal drip.

arlothemoo 08-23-2002 11:07 AM

i think i would...but i dont know what either of those are...

Stephanie 08-23-2002 12:01 PM

Dont feel to bad... my dad is full of useless information, and I unfortunately have a knack for it as well.

acid_kewpie 08-23-2002 06:27 PM

random fact... if you stretch out all the skin on an average human body it would be really really painful for that person. :D

shot_baker 08-23-2002 07:43 PM

my brothers say i'm rather quick witted, but all i can think of right now is ouch.
Hey, i wonder if thats why that flabby teacher of mine is always so grumpy.

They are forms of antibiotics, and they are for STD's.

Now you can impress your class with that one! :D

arlothemoo 08-24-2002 11:49 AM

where in wisconsin are you from? i can agree wiht the ":-(" here at my cottage im lucky to get my 28.8 connection

shot_baker 08-24-2002 12:19 PM

I'm in door county right now, will be heading off to Eau-Claire in a few days. I'm not from here though, was originaly from the west coast where there were mountains, rivers, and pine trees. Here in door county (Chicogo/Florida during the summer months) people think a bump in the road that goes up 20 feet is a big hill. Just an extremlly diferent culture and I miss the ocean; thats all the :-( means.

As far as the internet connection, i'm lucky to connect at 21. Ever try playing counter strike with a ping of 2250? :D

arlothemoo 08-24-2002 03:24 PM

no i usually have a cable modem...though when i really want soem stuff and have 20+ downlaods ive played diablo 2 wiht a ping of 12000...well i was in the game wiht that ping...can hardly call it playing and hey rib mountain the tallest place in wisconsin is only 8 ft short of being an official mountain (2000 ft)...i wanna live in japan we have no actual diversity here all rednecks and a few techies like me (im a newbie and im one of the most knowleadgable people in all of marathon county about linux)...its sad sorry for the rant...and all the "..."

shot_baker 08-24-2002 05:40 PM

2000 ft? I had a hill in my back yard in Washington that was over 4500 ft.

arlothemoo 08-24-2002 08:47 PM

well then its not actually a hill...its a mountain...but umm its like texas where the "nuclear power plant cooling pond" is a lake (wtf? they swim in a place that the name literally translates to "nasty water" and its warmer than any bath ive ever taken)...and hey if you miss the ocean go to one of the great lakes...itll be exactly the same except it wont taste as bad (uck salt water is nasty) and there are some decent bluffs down by madison if you just want some scenery (and YES! there is a river at the wisconsin dells no matter what your told it was the original attraction) SO THERE (i have pride in a state i hate :-( )

shot_baker 08-24-2002 11:21 PM

Yeah, the lake is great, but the waves on the lakes just can't compare to the waves that crash onto the rocks a hundred feet into the air out west.
I like WI here, and there are tons of great things here that i love, but my roots are still out there by the ocean. :(

arlothemoo 08-25-2002 01:19 PM

i musta been talkin to someone else about this stuff at the same time i thought you were originally from virginia...if id knonw west coast i woulda agreed it be better there...though dont people rarely drive imports there? mostly domestic...i couldnt live in a place like that i hope to never drive anything domestic unless its performance classic or free...

shot_baker 08-25-2002 05:52 PM

depends on where you're at... LA's a lot different than Seattle.
