The UN is far from independent, they have a vested interest in the "solution/problem".

This was said before in the past...Prior bombshell headlines were:
"1909: 25 or 30 years longer"
"1919: Two to five years until maximum production"
"1937: Gone in 15 years"
"1943: Peak oil has been reached"
"1945: Just thirteen years left"
"1956: Ten to fifteen years until peak oil"
"1966: Gone in ten years"
"1972: U.S. oil depleted in twenty years"
"1977: Oil will peak by the early 90s"
"1980: In the year 2000"
"1996: Peak oil likely by 2020"
"2002: Global peak by the year 2010"
"2007: Sometime between now and 2040"

I meant, in the spirit of our throwaway culture: we've messed this place up, let's move on.
Yes, the planet itself will survive our extinction. And so will all the plastic in the Oceans - there's one of our lasting monuments.

Even that may not last. It will form deposits somewhere and slowly be squeezed and heated by geological processes until it turns back into oil. And tens of million years from now, intelligent birds may well be extracting that oil.

That's not quite accurate. We have great, consistent models for what the Universe was like mere microseconds AFTER the Big Bang but so far no information has passed through the singularity for what may have existed outside or before our batch of SpaceTime. When we peer into the quantum level we can find no example of "nothing". In the most pure vacuum we can create, on the quantum level there are still apparently quantum fields in that vacuum and things pop in and out of existence constantly in it.

ChuangTzu I'm beginning to think you'd have been one of the populace that chose to ignore it when the ground began to rumble, writing it off as a "normal, natural event... nothing to be concerned about... get back to work" in Pompeii. I further think you might want to consider the deep meaning of "unprecedented" especially in regards to ice melt.

Yeah, not to mention that comparing the Universe with global warming is like talking about apples and oranges. Mere rethoric to avoid the truth, IMO.

And this is not a matter of being nihilist, it's a matter of being realistic and acceptably informed, and caring for our planet as well. It's clear that our different types of waste and our predatory actions are destroying many ecosystems and impacting the global climate. This is so clear that, as I said before, if someone just chooses to believe otherwise, they're almost willingly choosing ignorance (however, this is just my opinion; maybe some people are so blinded by misleading information from some media that they just believe them without even stop to question them for a minute. I guess the terms "conspiracy theory" and "conspiracy theorist" are wild cards that apply to anyone who says something different to what the mainstream wants us to believe... Anyway...).

Hah, this one is new to me.
Quote:
After World War II, it was said that the Allies floated to victory on a sea of oil. U.S. oil production increased by 3 billion barrels annually during the war. A massive amount of fossil fuel was used in World War II.
[...]
World War II's massive increase in the use of fossil fuel did not cause a corresponding increase in carbon dioxide in the air.
They forget to mention that the Axis powers had a serious shortage of oil though. Plus on the civilian side, rationing, turn-off-all-the-lights-to-avoid-being-bombed, factories which produce things using oil getting destroyed, etc, etc.

Example American war poster: CONSERVE COAL, OIL, GAS . . . FOR WAR.

So some corresponding stats on oil and other fossil fuel usage would be needed to make that argument relevant...

Not at all, I would never advise living near a source of such potential doom/problems. It's also why I would never advise living directly on the coast, especially on "beach front/ocean front" property. It was and still is a failure of policy and integrity to allow things to be constructed on land that cannot support such things. ie: coastal land/beach/tidal areas are designed to protect the land from flooding not have homes/businesses on them. Volcano's are nice to look at (when inactive) not to live next to or near. Common sense and Wisdom are often a diminishing trait unfortunately.

PS: Why the personal attacks, is it impossible to have an intelligent discussion with differing opinions/facts/theories without turning juvenile? You can do better then that enorbet.

From nothing comes something, and something turns back into nothing, and Tao is the source of nothing and something. Taoist/Zen proverb

Because one cannot have an intelligent discussion with some-one who regards the scientific community, the UN, and who knows what else as part of a giant conspiracy. He's doing his best, which is more than I have the patience to do.
