You could write your own simple C program that is a timer, then run it in multiple terminals, that's what I did.

I would be interested in learning what programs I would need to do C programming in Linux.

I tried in the past without much success.

I have done 16 and 32 bit assembly and C in Windows.

All you need in gcc and an IDE or text editor, I use geany.

Oh, yeah, you need glibc as well, in fact you probably also want the full development library package including glib, glib2, and many other libraries.
