Tiling X Window Managers
I've been trying to come up with a proper introduction for this thread [something related to current Desktop Environments and their adoption/promotion by various Linux Distributions] but I just can't seem to find the right words; so I'll get to the point:
Do you use a Tiling X Window Manager? Why (not)? Which do you like best? Which do you like least? Why? What are the advantages as far as you're concerned? And the disadvantages? -- I, for one, use DWM on my laptop. It's small, it's fast and it's written in a language I am familiar with so customisation is a non-issue. I'm currently pondering about going beyond the C header file used for configuration [i.e. start editing the main C file]. The only thing holding me back for now is my uncertainty of having the time/will to manage a personal custom mod [even though I would be the only one using it]. Being a recent convert I can't say I have any "least favorites". However, (re-)reading on various conflicts between various devs of various distributions and the author of ION made sure that's a WM I would -not- like to use. -- I'm sorry for omitting any Tiling WM from the poll options; I can't claim to know them all (or even most of them). |
I've been using ratpoison a little on-and-off. Right now I'm using openbox on my debian box and compiz on my ubuntu box (with metacity replacing it when I play games).
I liked rp because it made me feel uberleet. It probably has a small memory footprint too. Most of the time, I have two windows open: screen and firefox; rp handles this beautifully. However, moving windows around is not very efficient with rp, compared to a non-tiling window manager. Also, I like the bling of compiz :) |
Ion3
I use ion3 and I really like it. I use along with ROX-filer. Drag and Drop is so much easier when all of your window are in view
