When I first started with Slackware, I learned some useful things from the Slackware Usenet group, but, the last time I looked at it, several years ago, it was a shadow of its former self. I used to follow some other Usenet groups, but the ones I was interested in also mostly seemed to have devolved into sewers of spam.

Never even heard of Matrix until today!

I think most such conversations have moved to forums and "social" media.

Just my two cents.

I raised some Gen Y kids and they grew out of irc by age 10. One guy taught himself to touch type by playing a Dos-based 'falling letters' game, where you had to type the letters before they hit bottom of the screen. It was just too slow, and everyone moved on. The touch typist moved on because there was nobody to type at.

Never heard of Matrix in the same breath, and etc. is a bit vague.
