I wonder what's so unusual about that where The Onion even cared.

That's just two locals being friendly.

Very common actually. I've had contractors come to my house an ask who installed my pool fence, or who poured my patio.

And a lot of guys will identify well known landmarks where they've worked to support that they do good work. "Oh, you ever see that big house on the corner of blah-blah street? I did the deck/porch/paint/whatever for that." ... "Oh, great!"

I read the headline and thought they were talking about a different meaning of Windows.

I believe that confusion was entirely intentional on the part of The Onion. There is otherwise little merit to the article.

The Onion doesn't report on real stories, they make them up. Part of the absurdist humour is that they typically have things that are obviously not "newsworthy". See some of the other articles in the "local news" section.
