Hi Everyone

I am planning to get a new computer case. It is for my home computer and the size should be a mid tower. the main problem is sound. I need to get the most quiet case. I already switched my power supply to an antec trio with 120mm fan. now the case is next.

So what would you suggest? and what should I stay away form?

If your computer has a fairly slow CPU, you can probably get away with no fans at all (other then fan on the CPU heat sink).
If that is not an option (in most cases it is not), then liquid cooling can allow for less noise then using air cooling.

Even if you have a case with fans, there is no law that says you need to use them. Most of the time they can even be removed from the case to allow their holes to be used as air vents.

Generally, getting quieter hardware, such as silent video cards, or other passively cooled components has larger impact on sound than simply getting a new case. In fact, in some cases(no pun intended), it can even amplify the sound, especially if its one of these cases that has with some kinda 'airflow' crazy design. More holes than case. And to top that off ofcourse its equipped with some crazy 10 billion rpm fan. Not that it really needs it. Oh well.

On a bit of a budget and don't mind spilling water on your motherboard and starting a few house fires, then you can't go wrong with water cooling. Honestly I've been eyeing this attractive case for quiet some time.

Thank you for your responses. I have an amd athlon 64 so I need fans for sure. As for my other components they are pretty noisy, the harddrive specially.

I was thinking of getting antec p180. have you ever worked with? Is what people claim about it true?

Not that I should be trusting things because of brand names, but it is one of my favorite brands.

Though to be honest I haven't had a power supply simply just fail me yet.

I do like the Ultra X Connect modular power supply. Don't make the mistake of trying to squeeze it in a small case.

Might I suggest buying a pre-built? The Sun Ultra 20 workstation is exceptionally quiet. It's really hard to duplicate all that airflow engineering at home with off the shelf components...

The foams are great idea and i kinda liked sun ultra 20. but since I only want to switch the case I will go for the foam.

I was also wondering has anyone heard of plastic screws that prevent the hard drive noise to be amplified over the case??

lian-li's PC-V1100plusII is very quiet, available for about $250.
the p180 would be good as well, being a big steel case, you could quiet it down pretty well.

if you want to try to quiet down a case you already have use the acoustic foam, or install some dynamat on the side panels, some cases have rubber or silicone gaskets to dampen vibration from hard drives, but if you already have a way of dampening the vibration on the side panels, it won't make much of a difference, as the vibrations won't resonate within the case.

and get good fans, you can go crazy with expensive fans but I've found that these are the best, considering price, provided the case will accomodate 120mm fans.

a fan controller will help too, most install in a 5 1/2" drive bay, they're convenient but often clash with the styling of the case, I like the zalman fanmate 2, it's cheap, you buy one for each fan, stick them to the inside of the case, adjust them to your liking and forget them.

if your case has a metal door, all the better, just put some rubber around the edge and it can have a dramatic effect compared to a case without a door, especially with a cd fully spun up.
