The most difficult software to install
 

Ideally after you install the distro, you have all the softwares that you want to use. But the world is not perfect. I know today you can install softwares easily in Linux. Let's say...... apt-get...., swaret...... the gui installer like OpenOffice or Mozilla. It is easy...

Even with source, you can easily install the software. Just.....
./configure
make
su
make install

But some softwares are hell
Let's say that for some reason you cannot or don't want to install from gui installer or apt-get. You have to do it by sources. Unfortunately this damn software need you to read the README then ask you to install the damn libraries..... Hmmm, did I tell you that this software depend on more than 10 libraries. Well, this damn software ask you to edit some files... it ask you AGAIN to configure it some way...... Must with certain prefix...... This damn software depend on some weird libraries. Oh, you have to googling to look for the information...... ask in forum.... but hey..... you still cann't get it work......

Ok, what software ( for you and in your condition with your distro ) is the most difficult to install in Linux/Unix system??????

I use Slackware 9.1. And for some reason if I don't get from Patrick I compile from source.....

These are the hell softwares to install in Linux:
Number one........... gdesklets
2. gnucash
3. evolution

Note: I know in some distro, installing gnucash is a piece of cake. But have you try to install gnucash from sources? Or gcc froum sources? Just remember some softwares are difficult to install in certain distro and easy to install in some distro...... I am in Slackware environment.....

Ok, I spend hours to tweak and install softwares in my desktop..... Time to do serious things now.... Enjoy.....

Tuxracer was a nightmare. It wouldn't compile with gcc-3.3 without me hunting down a patch and it needed several other things installing first (SDL mixer, which needed SDL. glut needed tcsh and the instructions for compiling glut were not easy to follow). cdrtools-2.00.3 was very hard and printing is always hard to get sorted out. Not because any of the programs are hard to install but I always forget something somewhere. Gnome is a large undertaking but if you put it all in one script and put all the sources in one folder, it just takes one command to run the script.

I'm still going bonkers on getting "Possible Worlds" to run....

gcc is difficult. You've to compile a compiler...ghehehe. If you are not going to do Linux from Scratch though, there's very few reasons to compile gcc... yet, it's very well explained in the Linux from Scratch book about taking care of chain dependencies as egg or chicken came first-like :D

I think no s/w is hard to install in Linux if u follow proper steps !

but With lots of Help (!!) , u get struct in the middle in Windows !

The most diffecult to install in linux would be every one becuase they r just so damn complacted rmps r easy but i dont no were they go but i think a couple are easy like installin flash afetr working with it for a weak i found out lol.

xfree86 is HARD to install because theres no config scripts for it, altho its rather easy compared to linux kernel, but only if you know what your doing and do hours of research

next up is the linux kernel, i rank this #2 because it has a config option, not just edit this file .. but it gets rather annoying as iv had to compile the kernel 2-3 times a day for a few days to get sound support.... then Internet, then this, then that ... but granted i had almost no clue as to what i was doing :)

gcc was tough for me too. but once I understood the dependency issues, it kinda just flowed :)

What problems are you having there? (It's not worth losing sleep over)

Anything that involves more than a simple "./configure, make, make install" or "rpm -i" is too difficult.

gcc can be annoying, especially since you need gcc to install it. Aren't circular dependencies fun?

The annoyance with the 2.6.5 kernel is not installing it. Actually the installation seems to be easier than the 2.4.x branch. BUT the problem is getting it to work. I spent lots of time to get my 2.6.4 properly running on my slack 9.1. It was hell because the 2.6.x kernel tree is totally different from the 2.4.x and you need to relearn which modules you need or not.

GnuCash is impossible to install! After I spent hours installing the packages required for dependencies, it still gave me the same error, couldn't find a certain file, but I could.;) I still didn't get it to install.
