The Good Samaritan Thread

Folks who assist others are very kind and inspiring, it helps to learn from such folks and inspire others to do the same. Assisting others gives meaning to life.
Even the Bible has a Parable about The Good Samaritan:

Here is one for starters, Bipin Ganatra, he is a High School dropout but was awarded India's highest honor for helping others during fires:

My neighbour offered me a couch chair this morning, it looks like it's in good shape too...

We are all on the same exact Journey even if we all take different Paths along the way. It seems appropriate, right and wise to exhibit a little compassion for all fellow "travelers".

i am glad about all the articles i see here.

but i think a larger share of good "samaritanism" is much smaller and occurs in everyday life, with everyday people who lead crowded everyday lives yet manage to remain human and Do The Right Thing.
A smile on the bus, a quick reaction to help the old man, patience with your kid after a 10-hour day, letting someone else go first...

Perhaps those are better called as Random acts of kindness. Book of awesome gives ideas about how to appreciate the finer things in life.

If you haven't already seen the film Pay It Forward do so. While it sometimes slips into oversimplification and speculation it is nevertheless vastly preferable to any alternative as a point of view and a state of mind.

Helping out on this forum is just one small step each day.

i detest the usage of the term "Random" here - it seems to suggest that "Organized acts of kindness" are more important?

but i think the oppposite is the case:

kindness to our neighbours is not (only) something that someone with a terminal desease does to ease our collective bad conscience.

kindness to our neighbours (those who are physically close to us right now) is something that we all should integrate into our daily lives.

isn't that what the original good samaritan did, too?

i never saw it mentioned in the bible that he was so overcome by his own kindness that he set up shop by the road and gave interviews.

True, the man in an absolute saint.

The good Samaritan had what the ancient Greeks called 'agapé,' one of their 4 words for love, and meaning a love based on principle. He may have done kindness and spent money on someone he did not particularly like. He just cared for and supplied what the Jew needed.

The editors probably cut that bit out...
