As I recall, the last person who advocated burning books was He Who Must Not Be Named (if you do name him, you are generally held to have lost the argument).
Most people don't get the saying "the more you know the less you realize you know," soon everyone will be corporate pawns craving gold sneakers... and dying of cancer at the age 30 something.

Really? Doesn't everyone who has ever learned anything get it that the process of learning necessarily requires you learn more questions than answers?
It doesn't translate into "the more you know actually the less you know". It means only proportionately. IOW all humans, if they bother to learn anything, are constantly expanding their awareness of how much there is yet to know. That doesn't defeat the purpose of knowing.
A term nothing really matters isn't quite true either, just most of it...
How many religions are there, how many gods are there? Same goes for other useless junk; live well, die well!
I always grin at the extension of that cliche as it appeared on a John Mellencamp album title, "Nothing Matters, and So What if It Did?" Over the top Nihilism... what a hoot.
jamison I still don't get what appears to be your obsession with parents and their children and for the longest time I didn't get why you kept pointing out how many different gods there are and have been but I get that now. I never concerned myself much with how other people arrive at their conclusions whether by research or default, but some so-called "militant atheist" pointed out than anyone who believes in one god by definition denies the existence of hundreds and atheists merely "go one more" I get it now.
Parents aren't hard drives but *wastes of time* is programming the firmware!
Unimaginable tracks of it, think we won't be dead‽ Let us know if you are...
I'd think the fish could accomplish more
than just feeding the beans, climbing the corn
to further shade the squash and them?!.
For now: just keep pushing, pushing, pushing, push, push, push...

Haven't found any good Linux questions I could ask or answer!

Just like we learned santa claus isn't real, we can learn to evolve concepts like "evil" out of the equation. And, way faster than unimaginably! Look Ma no tick...
Sorry to change subject on you all, but this is/was/is titled about Religion.
There isn't a spot for me on that poll. I put down firm believer, but I'm most unlike your typical "Firm believer". Neither I or nor anyone knows it all. I think the options Deist, & Theist overlap in a way that isn't clear, but I take them to mean someone who believes in God in an abstract sort of way but does nothing about it. And why are atheists posting on a 'Religion' thread, to the extent that they are the majority. Religion is what they don't have, surely?
It's typical of LQ to find people religiously believing that all religions are wrong. Atheists and I can agree there. The involvement of religions in sexual misconduct and condoning war (= Aiding and abetting murder, torture, mass rape, etc.) renders them unworthy to represent God.
I mak a distinction between Religion and True Worship. Religion stinks, IMHO.
Plenty of orthodox religious believers would agree with you there! C S Lewis wrote in one of his theological works:
Quote:
The world will not listen to us until we have publicly repented of much of our past history. We have shouted the name of Christ and done the deeds of Moloch.

Actually that is not what this thread is about and Atheists were invited on purpose to see the complete distribution. For whatever reason (and that would be interesting in itself if it were possible to evaluate the commonality and universality of responses) the Poll shows a majority of Atheists, so naturally the majority of posts should be expected consistent with that distribution.
Here's the opening post describing the terms of this thread by the OP

I wasn't quite sure how to divide the list. This could easily grow out of proportion, so I decided to put the 'firm believer' on top. Whether it's Polytheism, Monotheism, or some kind of New Age thing. I know some of you don't like to be mashed together, but it is more about the state of mind than the actual religion that I'm interested in.
