Sure we know. Take 'self-awareness' as an example. Put a mirror in front of a dog. He will bark at the image, try to attack it, perhaps try to 'get to' the dog on the other side. He has no idea that it is 'him'. This is observable in all animals - except humans.
Seeing a 'mark' on a reflection of their own body in a mirror seems unrelated to self-awareness to me. It simply shows recognition of something that isn't "supposed" to be there. Something foreign.

The point is that they see it in the mirror, but know that it's on their own body, i.e. that the mirror is showing themselves, not some other animal.
... And if you want to bring up "imaginary tracks", let's talk about Lucy. People find bones in the sand scattered over a mile apart, finagle the pieces until they (kind of) fit, and bring it home singing about Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I mean really...is that the best the religion of "science" has? Who's the false prophet again, praytell? (That's not a rhetorical question, I'd like you to answer that.) ...
We came from single cells and atoms &c then cave men, not necessarily monkeys tho we don't think too different!
Really? Are you serious?
So, one day, there was no life - and a single-celled, living organism popped into existence by pure chance. How did the vast, irreducible complexity of the cell manage to form itself instantly and simultaneously? More "chance"?
Maybe a few hours later, this cell decided(?) to reproduce itself(?). How? Where did it get the energy required? There was no food or fuel (remember, nothing else was "alive" yet - no enzymes, amino acids or other organic/biologic material). What was the motive of the first cell to reproduce, anyway? It had absolutely NO competition, so why did it need to? "Survival instinct" is hogwash, since nothing had ever died, there were no threats, and... how would a cell even be "aware"?
Ok, so now it's reproducing, and soon we have millions of single cells all over the place. How do they survive? No plants, animals, fruits, vegetables, insects, trees - they won't be along for billions of years yet. Where is the food source to keep billions of cells alive? They can only feed on each other, so there goes any possibility of "evolution".
Ok, so somehow they miraculously survive on nothing for millions of years. One day, they get tired of being cells and decide(?) to graduate to something bigger. Interesting - billions of independent organisms suddenly get the "same idea" - how does that happen? Where do they get the new information needed to become a more complex organism? Why do some decide to become one thing, and others decide to become something different? Where is this decision mechanism?
So, some of these single cells graduate (over billions of years) into humans, tomatoes, ants, snakes, elephants, trees, flowers, slugs, and...yet...billions just decide to stay single cells and not "evolve" at all. Why not?
Where is the evidence of all the in-between forms? Our planet should be absolutely littered with billions of years of "evidence". The best we can do (beyond all the hoaxes) is stretch our imaginations over one or two "suspect" samples. Incredible. Just close your eyes, and don't mention the words "mutation' or "birth defect".
Even fairy tales have some remote semblance of plausibility. This is just a sad, desperate, illogical-in-the-extreme attempt to deny God. "Billions of years" can make any pipedream seem plausible to a man desperate to hide from God.

The nature of many persons is to seek out answers. Ergo, by default, people are not hiding from God. Why is God therefore not more visible in obvious form, much like the humans, tomatoes, ants, snakes, elephants, trees, flowers, and slugs?
Rtmistler it's stuck\hiding in the dream catchers? LOL
Abid, abid, abid that's all blind faith folks. "unimaginable" to many!
OregonJim do you remember looking at cork under a microscope or the letter e? If not that may be your luck, we can see the AIDS virus evolve over just our life spans and other small creatures too! WE can also watch the sperm enter the egg. To the first their more primitive minds were like thats a miracle but look around it's not... lets walk. Picture science as blue and fairy tales as red. Either they wipe each other out or one prevails! As pointless as war is killing so many innocent people, it also kills the stupid ones (sometimes even the ones pulling the string. ) Everyone who's into weapons will kill each other over time and people who know evil, killing, fairy tales as apocalypses and blind LALALAing don't\didn't\won't work so will be left to evolve more!
I hear what some may think, we need both; unimaginable grow up! Kids the easter rabbit too! I thought I saw one.

You make the assumption that God has natural "form" - that is, He is limited to three dimensions. Not true. Since He CREATED form, He is necessarily OUTSIDE of it - beyond it - existing in "multidimensionality" (for lack of a better term).
What's more, our eyes have a very limited scope of perception. We can't see molecules, for example, even though they exist in "our" dimension. Likewise, we can't even see huge planets when they are too distant for our eyes to perceive. We can't see radio waves or wind. We can't even see what's on the other side of a wall. Our eyes are hardly a reliable indicator for "things that exist".
Nevertheless, God makes Himself manifest in this world in many ways, including the "visible":
“Then they will cry out to the LORD, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done”. - Micah 3:4
Remember, people came face to face with Jesus, who is God, and STILL didn't recognize Him because of their love for evil.
