the best "unix like" or "unix" operating system
Solaris 10 is out and FreeBSD 5.3 is out. I have read reviews from osnews.com, slashdot.org.... I just want to know what is the best "unix" or "unix-like" operating system according to you for desktop and server or workstation.....
I know the "best" word is very loosy... Unfortunately I haven't try BSD and Solaris because lack of time. :( However I am happy with my Gentoo and Windows XP. |
is there really anyone here that's not going to say Linux? talk about a biased sample!
|
I'm using linux full time at home since last march and I never tried any other *nix before. Maybe next march (My "Month of change"....) I'll try BSD.

Minix!:)

linux, purely because of hardware support and my personal preference of sysV as opposed to BSD4.3.
|
I've used Linux for a few years and find that there are lots of divers for hardware. But Linux drivers tent to be buggy. Linux distributions tent to come with to much unnecessary software.
I’m using FreeBSD 5 and I’m like it. FreeBSD 5 pretty much all common hardware is supported. Configuring FreeBSD is a breeze and the documentation is some of the best I’ve seen. Also FreeBSD is a lot liter and does not come with unnecessary software. |
slackware!
OK, it's all I've used for the last 8 years, so I'm biased. And stubborn! |
I picked BSD. If it weren't for hardware compatibility, I'd use it. Slackware isn't bad though.

Re: the best "unix like" or "unix" operating system
I don't think that those three are the only *nix OS-s. There's Mac OS X, for a start. Minix. AIX. HP-UX.
Migulic. |
SCO Unix is the worst!
|
the Granddaddy of them all...Multics!!!
|
I use Linux everyday at work. When I go home I use Apple's OS X because it is by far the best OS on the planet. If you give OS X a fair try you will probably agree with me.
|
I tried out many Linux distros, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris 9 and Darwin, and currently I'm using Linux (Debian on PC and Slackware on laptop), cos I think it's absolutely the best.
I think BSD systems are extremely good, but some kind of strange under some aspects (I mean, for desktop users, for whom Linux rocks!). Solaris... uhm... awful? Terrible installation, pathetic hardware support, CDE as default interface, generally old... Let's use Linux!!! |
