Tech help? Is my computer or monitor trying to shut down?
I thought my monitor was going out but my tower changes pitch and my webcam light goes off when my monitor goes black. I have to hit the spacebar to get it to turn on again.
My natural instinct is to say that it's the monitor, but it's almost like it's hibernating. Can anyone tell me what in the devil is going on? I'm not the best with understanding computers myself.
do you know how I would stop it? it starts about 45 minutes after I turn it on and it's not like I'm away from it, I'm literally typing along and it shuts off.

Oh, now that's a different story.. hmm.. not sure why it would start to shutdown while your using it.

What specifically and in detail do you mean by "my tower changes pitch?" How are the power management options set in your CMOS setup? You probably also want to look at the power management settings in your Linux system also and turn off anything that would cause your system to power down after a certain period of time.
I have debian woody installed with nvidia accel drivers.
I use X and fluxbox.
recently I discovered that at a random time the monitor goes black as if it would want to go into powerdown mode or sthng similar. Moving the mouse does the trick of go back on but only for a split second and then it goes back off.
exiting X and going back (startx) helps just a little 'cause in a few minutes the problem is back again....
Only a restart of the pc helps.
I also saw that after the X exit / entering the problem is accelerated (it comes right away) if I start xmms. I haven't tested with other apps, but mozilla and xterm don't have the same effect.
I tried commenting every module that loads with X except for the glx module, but the problem persists....
Any advice? The Graphics card is pretty new, so I guess it couldn't be that (or at least I hope so)....
I had some problems with my computer... similar...
get your friendly nieghbour hood computer hardware dude to check the cmos and the powersupply. Also (this might be irrevelant, as I live in a dusty place) try cleaning the fans. (unscrew 'em, blow the dust out)
My power supply could be a suspect (at being dirty - guess you were referring to cleaning it)
Being broken... I don't think so.... anyway thanks...
What do you mean by "CMOS checked"? What could be wrong with it?
the graphics board was purchased in late September, so I guess that fan can't be dirty.
Any other ideas???
Why does it go crazy when I use xmms???
A observed another thing.... when this phenomenon happens: the display(where the fire-like graph is shown) of xmms freezes. (as if I paused the music, but the music is not paused)
