I am really confused by this. So, they are stopping using Ubuntu for their systems in favour of using a GNOME desktop? That's absolute nonsense! ubuntu now uses GNOME.
I appreciate that a few people liked Unity but since Cannonical are replacing it with GNOME moving from Ubuntu makes no sense.
Besides, most people who have been around for more than a few weeks realised that Unity+Mir(?) Was not a good idea.

they probably thought the moment is right (newbie confusion, something is happening to ubuntu, is it safe to use it? => system76 to the rescue!) to push something like this:

Another option is to use pop_os. Pop_os is somewhat trying to emulate Fedora. Now it's fedora vs pop_os. Fedora is already struggling in desktop market. This could be either good or bad for them. But whomever wins I guess it would be good for Foss community.

Fedora? Hardly. I doubt you understand why System76 is making POP OS. Fedora is the desktop distro developed mostly by RedHat; it's basically Debian with RPM. Pop!_OS is based on Ubuntu to cater towards System76 users. Fedora isn't developed for System76's customers (nor it's for RedHat's customers but that's another thing). I'm not sure why you think it would need to compete with Fedora. One of the devs shared some things about why Pop!_OS needs to exist on reddit:
Care to link sources that explain how Pop!_OS would be competing against Fedora only and not other desktop distros with similar ideas like Ubuntu, Solus, OpenSUSE, etc.?
