Swearing parrots

Staff at the Lincolnshire Wildlife Park were left with red faces when they made the mistake of isolating five new African Grey parrots together. I don't know what they were in isolation to prevent; probably psittacosis. I don't think birds can catch covid.

Unfortunately they took the opportunity to teach each other a lot of bad language. Staff think they did it because they were bored. Parrots are highly intelligent. They soon learn that their swearing makes people laugh, so they are encouraged to go on doing it.

That's hilarious. Thank you, hazel. Plastered a wide grin on my face.

"Swearing Parrots" would also make a damn fine band name!

I used to have to pass by a pet shop on my way home from school. It was a bad area.

The local kids had trained the (speaking) minah bird to make an appropriate foul mouthed remark to each kid entering the shop based on their sex. In very explicit language, I was told where to go, and girls what to do . The bird was never sold, of course. Now you could auction it!

Swearing parrots

Here I was thinking that this was going to be a thread about the "debate" from the other night.

I had a parrot many years ago, he didn't swear but loved joining in if you started laughing, also he could sound like a Trim phone - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimphone and for sounds here is an interesting site https://www.telephonesuk.co.uk/sounds.htm

Parrots aren't the only birds that can imitate phones. Starlings often do it too. When trimphones first came in in this country, many starlings learned to imitate them and it drove people mad.

I'm surprised though at that story of a mynah that could tell the sex of human beings and swear at them in gender-appropriate ways. Mynahs aren't as intelligent as parrots, though they are better at imitating human voices.
