Yeah, and that "new PC" is called a Macintosh. The computer that you don't have to explain to your grandmother how to use, and that you don't have to constantly "clean" for viruses and other malware. And it works just like her phone – which is an iPhone – and her tablet – which is an iPad.

I know plenty of people that don't or can't use a over priced, soon to be obsolete to make you buy a new ma¢ with its shnike swoop oh sorry appel on it, to its full or any potential there called muggles. :)

You don't have to be stupid to make mistake(s), everyone does that, even smart people fail sometimes. But in this case it seems like they are trying to pull another Oscar. Question is why? There is no "free lunch" as we already know. Why would they release free Windows 8 then?

Timothy Miller 03-09-2014 11:13 AM

Because they want people to use the M$ store. They reason that if they can get people to upgrade to Windows 8, then use the M$ store, they'll make more money than on selling licenses of Windows by itself. So Windows becomes free but they push the store for everything.

jamison20000e 03-09-2014 12:33 PM

Wouldn't be the first time microcoughed copied Linux, not that I consider canonical Linux idealistic.

They release it to get people hooked, it's a redux of the we only crack down on piracy in the first world. Then can generate secondary revenue from Windows through the MS App store

chrism01 03-11-2014 06:44 AM

Well, I've used only Linux at home for 12 years and counting ... and that's not going to change ;)

Microsoft never give anything away. Watch it be tied into Bing so they can collect data to sell anyone who installs it lots of things they don't want or need.

sundialsvcs 03-14-2014 07:14 AM

I think that Steve Ballmer's biggest failing is that he likes to play with X-Box. He wants to grab a piece of the "sexy consumer-electronics" space. Maybe he thinks that the reason why Linux is eating his lunch right now is because it doesn't have license-fees. Maybe he thinks that the reason why he hasn't been successful at selling any copy of Windows since XP to the general public is because of those fees. Well, those license fees are actually nominal, and they are not decision drivers.

They are what's paying the salaries of the only team of developers who have access to the Windows source-code and the ongoing responsibility for maintaining it.

Microsoft's bread-and-butter customers are businesses. They spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year in aggregate for Microsoft products including but not limited to Windows. And, by and large, they get what they've paid for. (Razz them if you want to ... sure, it's fun ... but they do some excellent work. Really. Somewhere. There's got to be some, somewhere... ;) ) So, if Microsoft is seen suddenly tossng a large chunk of revenue-in-hand over the side of its balloon in a crazy attempt to gain altitude, then lots of people are going to be asking very hard questions about why Microsoft suddenly can't make its own business-model work. What business-priorities need to be shifted, and which top executives (who are charged with setting and achieving these priorities) need to be replaced? Okay, we know of one, and he's leaving (although we're being very nice about it). But who else needs to go up on the scaffold, too?

From the article in the OP:
Quote:

We’re told that Microsoft is aiming to position Windows 8.1 with Bing as a free or low-cost upgrade for Windows 7 users.
Upgrade? I've had a Win7 laptop for 2 years. Dell Inspiron 14R, i3 processor, 6GB RAM, 500GB HDD. Did everything I needed it to do (mostly homework...) and 99% of what I asked it to do, and that 1% that it didn't do (games:D) was stuff that should have taken a much beefier computer to begin with.

Last Christmas my uncle gave me a new laptop. Dell Inspiron 15R. i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD. All sentiments aside, I should be perfectly willing to let my little sister have the previous laptop. (Notice I said "previous", not "old") Except for the fact that it runs Win8. I had a bad taste in my mouth to begin with, because it came with a bad HDD. Dell decided to replace the motherboard as well, and now I'm having different problems that most likely are related to the mobo replacement. So they're replacing the mobo again next week. Why, if I got it for Christmas, am I still having problems next March? Because I hardly use the thing for anything semi-productive (with the noble exception of LQ) and use my Win7 laptop for anything that's relatively important.

But it works well enough to inform me that I'm NEVER going to willingly submit myself to torture like Win8/8.1 again. Unfortunately, my parents want the good (win7) laptop to go to my sister, regardless of what I say.:(

I used Clonezilla to back up my Win7 laptop a while back, I'm tempted to "accidentally" restore it to the wrong laptop...and guess which laptop has absolutely NO backup that includes the OS? Or better yet, purposely infect it with viruses (or viri...?) and inform my parents that if I don't wipe the ENTIRE disk (including the recovery partition) that their WinXP computer is in danger if infection.

Sorry about the rant, I'm almost ready to see how Windows 8.1 responds to a 20-foot drop out my window...If it didn't play nice with TF2, it would already be there.

Die-hard-Linux-User 03-19-2014 08:15 PM

Here's a giggle for a MS commercial for windows 8.1

"So crappy, microsoft is practically giving it away..."

sundialsvcs 03-19-2014 08:34 PM

Obviously, you shouldn't do anything like that to your parents or to your sister. [i](Well, not to your parents, anyway ... ;) )

If you really don't like Win8 ... and I don't know of anyone on this planet who does ... can you buy a non-OEM distro of Win7?

A 20-foot drop would also be a good idea. (But once again, not for your sister ... really.) However, what did that poor sidewalk down there do to you? That you would drop a sack of  like Windows-8 upon it? How rude.

baldy3105 03-26-2014 01:44 PM

Ha ha, Windows, so rubbish even free is to high a price!
