I'm experiencing the following problems:

1. Microsoft Updates do not install. The last update to successfully install was on 2/14/07. I manually go the Microsoft's web site to do the download/installation.

2. ccApp.exe does end properly when I shut down Windows. Many times I get the program is not responding dialog box. I believe ccApp.exe is a Symantec program. I'm running Norton System Works 2003.

3. msmsgs.exe does not end properly when I shutdown Windows. This normally happens after the ccApp.exe error. I must do an End Now for Windows to shutdown.

Lastly, my PC takes a long time booting up.

I did the following steps before running HijackThis:
Run ATF Cleaner
Ran Windows Defender
Run SpyBot S&D

Attached is the HijackThis log.

Any help is appreciated.

:D:D Sounds like an average Windoze installation that's working as well as can be expected.

Are you running this Windoze inside a virtual machine, or some other Linux-host environment? If so, please provide details. If not, kindly notice that this is the 'Linux Software' subforum, on a Linux Forum, and therefore the wrong place for this question. You may get more favourable replies from 'winforums.com'.

Sounds like it's time for a good windows washing..

Backup your data, Format the drive, Reinstall windows and all your applications..
System should run good again, for a while anyways..

Boy I sure don't miss having to do that..

For starters, you should get rid of Norton. It is the most dubious antivirus solution I have ever seen. Avast or Kaspersky are just so much more reliable.

Secondly, remove any temporary files and reboot. Try again.

If no help, run an online Panda scan. Make sure to disable any antivirus package you have running or you'll end up with clashes.

Thirdly, if nothing is detected, open up the survey of MS updates and click on any failed updates to find out what is wrong. Nine times out of then, the explanation will be something you could have thought of yourself i.e. useless. Remove the latest updates and verify whether the issue persists. If not, use google to find a solution - which usually comes down to reinstalling at least half of your windows.

Sorry, It wasn't my intention to imply that nobody would help :) but rather to just get more relevant detail (if there was any, which there wasn't) and to also suggest a Windows forum as a possibly better place to inquire.

As to the substance: I cannot count the number of times I fixed Windows issues by re-installing. Now we can solve Linux issues by switching distros..;)

(And speaking of, I thought I had eliminated Win from my life for good, but as it turns out, my new job is filled with it.. The (internal) intranet, presentation equipment and printer terminals are all running Win 2000, and the machine tools are all programmed & communicated with using Win 2000 terminals. Having been on the job a mere 3 days now, I have seen more reboots there than I've seen in the past 11 months at home :D)

1. I can't 2nd the "Dump Norton" sentiment heartily enough. My experience w/ Symantec goes back over 20 years to "Q & A", & AFAIAC everything they touch turns to manure.
2. In addition to the Panda online scan, consider Trend Micro's HouseCall. I use it 2ce a month to scan my girlfriend's W2k box. For me, one of its best features is that there is no need to run IE to use it -- the FF interface/"engine" works just fine.
#6 & #8: Based on experience w/ the H(ouston)LUG weekly Linux Workshop generous "Winders" help for a fledging penguin (me), I coined the following:
#8: We have a couple pieces advice for "Winders" users (or should it be "usees"?):
1. Reboot it twice a day, whether you think it needs it or not.
2. Reinstall it twice a year, whether you think it needs it or not.
These are only mildly tongue-in-cheek.
Of course w/ the advent of W2k, XP, & Vista one might argue that the time periods should be lengthened -- but only a little bit.
#9: Sasha, my deepest sympathy. I hope they are paying outrageously well. Isn't that considered hazardous duty?
