So I never knew you wanted to end up as a PRISON LIBRARIAN

OneBuck i'm trying...

I would like to say before going in to my post that I love LQ and think it is a great forum.

Once when I was living in Palm Springs CA. My box was hacked. I could see some of the software and using the logs the only thing I could make out was a MAC address. I contacted the sherriff's office I was told that they didn't handle that I should contact a forensic computer engineer if I wanted to make a complaint. The complaint was $500 for the filing plus the cost of the computer engineer and they would need three copies. Time went by. Some of you know that I hate coincidense. But I think that parts of statistics are unrecognized genious. Anyway, I go to a relative's wedding. Coincidense, I meet a guy there who is a Windows Computer Forensic Engineer or whatever they call it.We talk and I tell him about my problem. He says he is well aware of the situation and has software that will work on the drive. More time passes. We continue to talk I find out that he took one class for a week and paid $2000. He is an expert. When the time comes to analyse and identify the intrusion with software. He can't do it. He is not regulated by the state, Turns out like most states there is no regulation. Why am I not surprised.

I will tell you about another time several years later still in California. Although I will always love LA and want to go back there was a confluence of events and trends. Like some things it was some about what wasn't said or written. It wasn't one day but you became aware of it one day. Bodies started showing up everywhere. The newspaper gives little coverage and mentions that there is a drug problem. In addition to coincidence I hate newspapers. I think it is organized lying by mostly large organizations. More and more bodies are found in the Date Palms, Pools, Cars, and so on. No real story emerges. I finally talk to a gang member and he tells the Cartel Members are up from Mexico and they will do you two in the back of the head for $500 or break your knees on a curb for $250. I think about this and we leave not long after that.

My last part of a Linux or Windows story. In writing this I think to my self that I should change my LQ name from Kudsu a relentless, obnoxious, creeping vile, pervasive plant to idiot savant. To an idiot savant it only matters if your right. Like a Hacker in the end you just want to get away. You do know that much of the government efforts are to monitor your communications. Seems to me from history that it leads to more than this.

Anyway you go away on vacation. You come home after a long trip. You love your wife. You notice that you dog is very groggy. You sit down at dinner but there is a knock at the door. You answer the door and you are arrested and your computers are confiscated. You tell you wife that it's all a mistake you love her and will be home soon. You meet with your attorney. He tells you there is child porn on your computers and it will cost $250000 but you'll get leinency. The trial to use Dylan's phraise is a pig circus. No one in the room has the IQ of the phone change in your pocket. They present the evidence on your harddrives. The speech and the presentation are well rehearsed and although the computer engineer is not licensed and has no degree. Everyone knows that computers are never wrong rings in you ears. The judge looks down on you with unrelenting disgust. You get 25 years. Your wife leaves, your kids don't want anything to do with you. You don't have any friends left. The family that you have treats you like a pariah. You in a sentient moment realized the attack could be planned and executed anywhere by any one. The above senario could be varied endlessly. You realize that you will never know who got to you. You end up prison librarian and have a nice day!

Isn't that why we have a jury of disinterested citizens? Shouldn't they suffer the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt? The county I live it can't seem to convict more than 20%.

I totally agree that 99% of users or more don't have the skills to prove they are innocent.

I do worry that some of the things on the internet affect the innocent children or women. The crooks online make the lives of companies, and nations weaker.

Having worked in the construction industry when I was young, I'll have to echo the sentiment of a comedian. "Thank *God* we got penitentiaries! "

You should be posting this type of thread in <General> not <Linux-General> which is for Linux related topics.
Quote:

Linux - General This Linux forum is for general Linux questions and discussion.
If it is Linux Related and doesn't seem to fit in any other forum then this is the place.
Moved: This thread is more suitable in <General> and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

General This forum is for non-technical general discussion which can include both Linux and non-Linux topics. Have fun!

Take responsibility for your personal security and it will far more likely be done right. all the people should be prepared to fight. Those of us who do having to pay for the security of those who make themselves into fat easy targets is charity to the lazy. I'm long sick of it.

Learn about security. Martial arts and guns are both fun. C'mon, you know its true. Get on it.

Like computers? Learn about them. I am and these thoughts are largely why.

In the west, when you open a gold shop, all the people of the country down to the poorest share the financial burden of it's protection. Here in most of Asia, should you open a gold shop, the police will come and tax you as you are bringing more prospective crime to the area possibly requiring a new hire.

The old axiom "Hoard no jade nor precious things" means do so and expect thieves to come. Best not to inflame the hearts of the people but should you do so, expect some reactions to be negative. Prepare for the predictable reactions to your action by the many denied.

Conclusion : People with enough money for gold shops and fine computer networks have enough money to protect them. Robbing the poor to pay for rich people and corporations is the Western model.

Added social bonus: the Asian police are always available for rapes, killings, robberies and other REAL crimes. They can do their jobs. go figure.

Best 'o luck on gettin' 'em to protect you. They can't do nothin' else right.

"Want something done right than do it yourself."

The OP reminds me of a video I once saw on YouTwitFace. An "heroic" teenager used a trojan to gain remote control of various celebrities' computers, then after using his access he contacted police to tell them he'd 'found' child pr0n on their hard disks. The video took the cracker's story at face value, I just hope the judges (and the victims' no-doubt expensive lawyers) had the sense to look a bit deeper.
