And it looks and feels pretty Unix-like to me. If I had to describe the feel of it, I'd say, "GNOME." Which isn't so bad, if you're into that sort of thing.

Agreed with this post 100%. Ubuntu is NOTHING like WinBloze. The two couldn't be more opposite:

Ubuntu is FOSS, while WinBloze costs $399 per computer to get what Ubuntu offers. Ubuntu has Bash, while WinBloze has a DOS-like core. Ubuntu's kernel is Linux and monolithic, while M$ has a bloated microkernel that takes up the entire OS sans third-party apps. And IMHO, if you want Linux to look like WinBloze, install KDE or LXDE, not GNOME.

Comparing Ubuntu to WinBloze is like comparing a Bugatti Veyron to an average Ford or Toyota car: the Bugatti has much more power but also much less of a market share.

As for getting back on topic, see see this post for what I have to say.

That's kind of a poor analogy...the Bugatti only has less of a market share because it's more expensive. The price (usually $0, unless it's RHEL or Novell SUSE or some other commercial distro) is actually, ironically, part of the very reason Linux has a small nich of the OS market; people don't see any value in free (as in beer) items, so they figure that Linux is worthless (again, unless it's a paid-for distro like RHEL). Although I'd say this isn't so much a fault of Linux as it is a fault of society...or something like that.

In all seriousness, though, we should probably get this thread back on topic. Linux geeks talking about girls...:D (<- Okay I know that was probably rude and a bit sexist. Sorry gals!)

Anyhow, why the tell are everyone fighting on what is Linux and what is not? I thought Linux WAS the kernel and Linus was authority to decide if a distribution will ever be called Linux distribution?

Linux is, indeed, the kernel. However, it is also the OS. This has now been cleared up and will never ever be discussed further on LQ. Anyone wishing to do so should attend their nearest re-education centre.

That is all.

This post should be renamed something else...lets debate on it!

I have my wife, mother, and sister running Linux Mint. I haven't been so successful getting my dad to switch over. My wife is so used to it at this point that when she has to be on a Windows machine she hates it.
