Snooker vs. Pool

Anybody likes Snooker around here? I really like the game. It's much more strategic, skillful and interesting than pool, especially 9-ball pool.

I really like 9-ball pool for its fast play and quick games, but there is nothing that can beat a good old game of snooker on a large championship table.

By the way, has anybody tried to play snooker? I tried and it's really much harder to play than you see it on TV. The first few times, I could not even get the cue to hit the middle of the cueball

But I am now fairly confident of making a few easy pots, though it's been quite a while since I played this wonderful game.

IMHO snooker is much more interesting than pool. It implies a strategic thinking and it really makes you (if you want to improve your skills) "feel" what you're playing, with all the effects possible.
On the other hand it's harder too, much bigger table, longer and thinner cues, even the scoring gave me headaches at the beginning. And a game lasts much longer also . But once you get the feel of it, you won't stay away from the table for much.

both are great games and serve differenet purposes. pool is fast, relatively easy and fun even if you donīt know how to play. snooker requires skill and consentration plus it doesnīt allow too much synthehol during play.
when i meet my friends we may play some pool. i have ditched snooker since it is not funny if you donīt play a lot. during my glory days i had once a break of 36. not anymore.

I have not seen a genuine pool table (except once) but I believe that even the pot shape, the baize used are different.

I played pool once. It was too easy. I could get the hang of it in about a quarter of an hour and I loved the feeling of being able to make pots so often.

Snooker. I just don't have the patience. I rarely get to play both anyway, but I just thought I'd share some of my interests with you people since I recently got a computer simulation of snooker (World Championship Snooker 2004) and at least I can play whenever I want to rather than go to a club or a snooker joint.

In India, Snooker and Billiards are very popular games, but pool somehow hasn't caught on. You're also likely to see a lot more snooker tables than pool tables.

Even the "pool" tables that are available in most snooker places are not genuine pool tables, just Snooker tables with smaller dimensions. It's no fun to play in those because the pots are similar to the snooker pots and the balls don't pot so easily like in the genuine pool tables.

And most people don't know 9-ball pool (which is one of my favourite variants). In India, the European 8-ball pool seems to be the definition of the word "pool".

Snooker sucks if you're rubbish at it. sort of game that's not worth playing if you're not good. And pool doesn't seem worth playing if you're really good at it...! I was watching some pool on tv last year... some times the other guy would go for three frames at a time without having a go... seems like a fundamental flaw, all based on random bad luck that one of them somehowmanages to miss a pot. and the pure brute force breaks.... nah.

pool = after work, at the pub.
snooker = people who deserve respect!

i suck at both of course... and yeah no one plays 9 ball here.

I couldn't disagree more, I'm hopeless at snooker and pool but i love to play. Snooker is very popular in the UK, i'm not sure about in the US. It is a more skillful game that requires plenty of time to play.

Snooker over pool any day (my 2 Pennies)

What about French billiards ? Three balls, one red, two whites, no pots. Now, that is strategy turning into art.

The rules are so complicated few people understand them, let alone can properly play the game.

i used to play french billiards from time to time. it is indeed a great game and really can brush up you skills in calculating the movements of the balls after impact.

8 and 9 ball for in the pub or just shooting for fun with some friends
snooker and billiards for longer more strategic games which take some concentration and skill.

8 and 9 ball affords a player with a little bit of luck to do reasonably well (ie 9 in off break or cannon for a win) where as the others sort those who can play out from those who just hit the balls around. In all forms white ball controll is the key I reckon.
