Snail mail
I always thought this phrase was a reference to the postal service being necessarily slower than email. But it turns out there is a double meaning.
Apparently snails love the glue used to stick envelopes together and therefore like to crawl into post office boxes, where there is plenty for them to eat. I read today that a North London postbox has had to be closed while a colony of molluscs is cleared out of it. |
The naked snails in my garden sometimes get into my mailbox and feast on my mail. At first I thought some of the envelopes had been stuck in some machine and therefore got ripped open but one day I saw a naked snail having a go at it.. If I catch them again at it, I'll take a photo.

Naked snails are called slugs. At least on this side of the pond.

Every now and then I find a snail in the bathroom, they hide in the ivy outside the window and occasionally venture inside. Several times lately I've removed one from the top of a stack of toilet rolls and put it back in the ivy. Last time I popped a roll off the stack, not only was there slime on the edge, but part of the cardboard middle had been scraped off. These rolls have a shiny bluish finish to the cardboard, and only that layer had been eaten.
Now I think about it, I don't remember the snails showing any interest in bogroll in the previous couple of years. Unfortunately I can't remember the brand, otherwise I could buy the same again, and leave one next to an envelope to see which the snails prefer. |

If the trails are generally in the same place, sprinkle some salt across the area. Salt and slugs/snails do not get along, because salt is a deadly poison to them.
