Yes, it's called "MplayerTube", but I can't seem to get it to work for me. Still pulls up the default Flash player. :(

Do you think I need to uninstall Flash to make it work?

I'm using a script called Free Youtube!, works well for me.

I think there are some reasonable uses for Flash with respect to interactive presentations such as certain type of CBTs (Computer Based Training), and perhaps sale presentations.

"Interactive" is the key word here, because obviously there are many preferable alternatives if all you want to to is show an animation / movie.

In this day and age of advanced "Web 2.0" JavaScript with all its AJAXy goodness, there is no excuse for Flash navigation.

I have been playing around with Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and its ability to embed videos in a pdf so that any computer with the free Reader 9 can view them is fun stuff. File sizes can quickly get out of hand but for large organization intranets or DVD distribution of training materials, flash will remain a viable tool.

I watch YouTube in Chromium using HTML5.

The controls and features better than in the Flash player, too!

pr_deltoid 06-29-2010 07:58 AM

I think it'll improve...

MTK358 06-29-2010 08:00 AM

What will improve?

pr_deltoid 06-29-2010 08:08 AM

Flash. I don't see it doing anything in the future but getting better if it's still around, obviously. In the future, if it's still around, you'll like it. ;)

, only if Adobe makes it open-source, and then I'm still not sure.

Also, I HATE HATE HATE it when web developers make the whole website and navigation in Flash. It destroys most of the standard functionality!

Yeah it's too bad that it's so popular and widely used because it needs to be replaced.

Yes The Future will see better faster computers, and flash will have to get much better to be able to crash these new devices.

Flash is a good use for online games, or maybe the annoying ads on web pages, but flash shouldn't be used for navigation or video...

Ridiculous and stupid online games, but I guess people still find them fun when they're bored.

I am very eager for Youtube to move fully to html5. Honestly, the only reason I ever made an exception to use flash, is for youtube. Other than that, no reason at all to ever use it. The games on flash are crap, and like others has stated before, navigation on a flash only site is just an abomination, and of course we haven't forgotten flash based ads.

H_TeXMeX_H 06-30-2010 10:29 AM

I just have a downloader extension installed for youtube, no need for flash.

MTK358 06-30-2010 11:10 AM

YouTube is HTML5 already. Just go to www.youtube.com/testtube.

I just wist that instead of using Flash by default, it would:

Check if your browser supports WebM. If so, use the HTML5 + WebM player.

Else check if your browser supports HTML5. If so, use the HTML5 + H.264 player.

Else fall back to the Flash player.
