It only works (intermittently) in Chromium for me.

FWIW, I'd like to see Flash gone away. I usually have it blocked or disabled anyway, but when I DO have to use it, it works fine, but something built right into HTML would be better IMO.

Also, the beta link above doesn't play for me, using FF 3.6 my own build. Maybe not enough support yet? I can't recall what state the HTML5 support is in this version of FF.

The Youtube beta is exactly what I was talking about. While the pages use HTML5, the video itself is still encoded in h264 and thus won't work on mozilla-based browsers at this time. Youtube will have to convert all it's video to theora before that will happen. But since theora is just an optional codec, there's no external pressure on them to do so. What reason do sites like that have to spend time and money to convert and store their entire video catalogs in multiple formats just so they can support all browsers?

Being the big dog on the block, whichever direction Youtube/Google decides to go is going to have a major impact on what happens with HTML5 video support.

Still I would rather install non-free codecs than Flash. I often have non-free codecs anyway to be able to view most media files.

@ MTK358: That link for the youtube html test site works great with Chrome. What were the issues you were having with it?

I only works about 1/4 of the time, and Chromium by itself loads web pages intolerably slow.

We should let go of flash to play videos. For that we now have html5. But flash still got functions html5 doesn't have, doesn't it? It's got support for input devices, so it can access web cameras, microphones, keyboard and mouse so that. That gives a lot of options for games and such. (I, for one, prefer flash games to java. I think. I hardly play any games) But I don't really know if html cover these areas as well in the new standard.

Anyway, flash >> silverlight, so in the end I don't think we should let it go. That would be like giving Microsoft a Christmas present and eventually we (GNU/Linux uses) would get a great backfire.

What's happening with Gnash?

But, who uses webcabs through flash ? I've never heard of it, or a microphone.

Silverlight is dead.

As to html5, meh. I'm more interested in seeing IE embrace CSS3.

I don't mind flash for video content or games, what pisses me
off is forms or navigation written in flash. It makes it next
to impossible to automate tasks - or at least I haven't found
a way of e.g. using flash-based auction sites via perl.

Flash is widely overrated, and certainly used too much in areas
where plain-jane HTML would have given the same results ...

Using flash for purposes such like that is a real pain in the ass. Some online shops use flash. All flash. You can't give someone a link to ask there opinion on something, you need to give them directions. That's useless.

I don't mind flash for mini flash games, but for video, it sucks! I have a dual core machine @ 3300mhz and videos still skips. Mostly skips viewing in the browser, such as being on youtube. Though performance is better playing in VLC or SMPlayer. I'm not a fan of flash navigation either.

I really hate flash navigation , too. What are they thinking?
