What I can't understand is that millions of years of evolution have failed to erase suicidal tendencies from the gene pool. Surely they must perform some useful function - maybe its a device to ensure that the emotionally weak do not contribute to the next generation. In Nature, there is a reason for everything.
If I were a real man, yes, I would have done that. Sadly, I'm not. By the way, she's getting engaged to a doctor. Unemployed coders usually never get the girl.

So... You are a real man, because you will do this... and move on with your life... that's what real men do...
Real men build their future life in the present, not in the past.
And when they build it thoughtfully... they rarelly, if ever at all, look back.

If you are suicidal and/or depressed, then get treated. There is no substitute for a proper medical care plan. This is no joke, and there is no reason to wait. Get yourself well. Period.

F^%$ her, then. Wish her well, and forget about her. It wasn't meant to be (at least for now).
Believe me, as soon as one gets away, another will come along. Worry about taking care of yourself, and the rest takes care of itself - keep your mind healthy (see above), keep your body fit (eat well / exercise), and stay gainfully employed. You will not have trouble meeting a new lady.
The phrase "the best revenge is living well" comes to mind. It was obviously not meant to be so the next phrase you need to learn is "harden the fsck up" (it sounds better with a Cockney accent, by the way).

Ah yes, the determinism excuse at work...
So lemme get this straight: rather than try to deal with these problems yourself, you'd rather blame it all on evolution, saying that there's a valid "reason" behind your possible intentions which has nothing to do with you personally?
I'm not saying it's easy, I'm just saying you should at least try...
(Disclaimer: I don't claim to have experience in these matters, but I just find it kinda pathetic to resort to this kind of an excuse...IOW, please don't take the above as flame bait. This will [hopefully] be my only post to the thread.)
Pray. If ever there was someone that it helps to have on your side.....
Get very, very productive. Not only does it make you popular with employers (and volunteer projects) but it expands you skills and stops the brooding. For a while. Mostly. Brooding bad, leads to making stupid lists.
When it hurts less, start opening your eyes. Sometimes something (someone) wonderful nearly drops into your lap: you DO want to notice!
Been there, done that, outgrew the t-shirt and broke the coffee cup over my own head.
Then met my wife.
