server use of Dell OptiPlex GX150
Hi,
I am thinking of buying 2 used Dell OptiPlex GX150 mini desktop PC, in order to experiment a little bit- hoping to build a cluster maybe. There are some things i would like to know: -How good Linux support do they have? Googling around, i saw many people experimenting on them and also the hardware looks it has pretty good support, but if anyone has previous experience it would be useful. -Is their 150W PSU enough? The power will only be used by a HD, not any optical drives etc. -Do you think there will be a heating problem? I intend to use them later maybe as servers and connect them to the internet and my router for our wireless city network; they will have to work a little hard maybe. If anyone has nothing better to do: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx150/en/ug/index.htm Post any thoughts. Thanks a lot. |
Shouldn't have any problems. But what kind of servers are these going to be? If this is for a production type environment or for commercial business, your better off getting a server class machine instead of used desktops.. especially one's that will have a load on them..

No it's not for production cause. High internet costs has pushed individuals in Greece to join/create wireless -meropolitan scale- networks in many greek cities. I intend to use it for this reason- i hope.

I've installed it on a GX150 with no problems at all. It didn't have a modem in it so I don't know about modem support for that model. Where I'm working we actually have a production web server on a gx150 mini. We are a county-owned hospital and in 4 days we will officially be owned by a corporation so I am sure that is to change. The server only gets used by a limited number of people so we haven't had any trouble with it being under powered.
